Bottom Line

Located in the bustling heart of Midtown East, the mid-range, Hotel 32 32 offers a solid rate for its excellent location -- one block from the subway, and walking distance to numerous landmarks including the Empire State Building. But there are no common areas, and aside from free Wi-Fi, in-house features are lacking. Guests must trek off-site to take advantage of a free daily breakfast and free fitness center access at affiliated establishments. Its 102 apartment-like rooms are stylish, contemporary, clean, and well-equipped with flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, minibars, and marble bathrooms with free toiletries. Many rooms offer cityscape outlooks, balconies (one has a deck), and kitchenettes. Hotel 32 32 is hard to beat on price and location, but travelers seeking more on-site features could try the Bentley Hotel, which can have lower rates.

Hotel 32 32

Scene

Sleek, apartment-like buildings dressed in contemporary decor, but no common areas

Occupying two slender 17-story towers on either side of a hectic Manhattan street, Hotel 32 32’s steel and glazed-glass facades bear contemporary contrast to their older red and brown-brick neighbors. Despite the architectural contrast, its reflective exteriors mirror the surrounding streetscape, and would easily blend in altogether if it weren’t for the striking black and white-signed awnings marking their narrow entranceways. Past glass double entrance doors, the compact reception feels more like an apartment building foyer than a hotel lobby -- and inside, the contemporary vibe continues with contrasting wood-effect walls, and an abstract gray front desk. More black and white signage dominates the tiny lobby space, shared only with a wall-mounted TV and the elevator. On-site features don't fit into 32 32's narrow footprint, so guest have to trek off-site to the affiliated Captain's Cafe and Boom Fitness, which act as the hotel's restaurant and gym respectively. Some guests find it inconvenient, but they fit the hotel’s apartment-like vibe that forces its guests to experience the local hood, just like regular Big Apple inhabitants.

Rooms

Contemporary, tech-savvy rooms with marble bathrooms; some with balconies and/or kitchen facilities

Sleek, streamlined rooms run with a contemporary theme, marrying fresh white or rich burgundy with soft oyster grays on the walls, all offset by dark timber floors. Black accents add bold contrast, and abstract modern artworks add fun pops of color. Floor-to-ceiling windows let in plenty of light and showcase city street or roof-scape views (unless you’re at the much darker rear where mostly fire escapes reside). In general, higher rooms have more light and better views. Room categories range from Studios to Suites and Deluxe -- some layouts offering balconies, well-stocked kitchenettes, and one even has a roof deck. Tech-savvy features include free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs with cable, iPod docks, and DVD players (in some rooms). Minibars are well-stocked with snacks and soft drinks, and coffee- and tea-making facilities are also provided. Work desks, digital alarm clocks, and irons and ironing boards are all there. Luxurious marble bathrooms are equipped with a selection of free premium individual toiletries and glass walk-in showers (some higher-category rooms have shower/tub combos). Closets contain fluffy robes, safes, and hairdryers.
