Bottom Line

Located in the middle of the vibrant NoMad neighborhood, Hotel Deauville is a budget hotel with character. Built in 1901, the hotel has a Beaux Arts facade and has retained some of the features of that epoch, including a quirky vintage elevator (with its own operator!), an exposed red-brick decorative fireplace, and a piano lounge. The Flatiron Building and the Empire State Building are within walking distance, and there's a subway station a block away. The 54 guest rooms, which range from Singles with shared baths to a Junior Suite with a living area and kitchenette, are spotlessly clean and well-equipped with flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi, but some can be cramped and dark. Travelers could compare rates with nearby Hotel 31, which has views of the Empire State Building from some rooms.

Hotel Deauville

Scene

Housed inside a 1901 building with a vintage elevator

Located on a busy New York street, Hotel Deauville is in an attractive seven-story building dating back to 1901. The building, like many of its type in New York, was previously a single-occupancy hotel. An interesting period detail is the vintage hand-operated elevator, complete with an elevator operator manning the controls. The wood-paneled reception area, with its mosaic floor and exposed red-brick decorative fireplace, has an Old World ambience, and is decorated with vintage posters. The adjacent lounge area has a jazz theme, featuring a piano, leather sofas, and framed photos of famous jazz musicians who stayed at the hotel in decades past. The hotel is popular with tourists seeking centrally located budget lodging.

Rooms

Clean rooms but a bit dated in decor; some share bathrooms

The 54 rooms at Hotel Deauville are clean and well-maintained but can vary widely in size, from Singles to Junior Suites, and some can be quite cramped. Not all have private bathrooms either. All the rooms are air-conditioned, and have flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi. Junior Suites have kitchenettes, which come with mini-fridges, coffeemakers, electric kettles, two burners, and microwaves -- these are also available on request. Each Junior Suite also includes a living room with a sofa, dining table and chairs. These rooms can accommodate up to five people, and they're a good choice for families and friends traveling together.

The rooms are decorated in a simple style, with white walls and dark-brown carpeting, but there are a few old-fashioned details, such as the floral bedspreads and tacky watercolor paintings on the walls, which are eyesores. Some of the rooms have antique-style furniture, which adds a tasteful touch. Many of the bathrooms are decked out in very dated tones of pink or lilac, but others feature more modern white tiling with black-and-white checked floor tiles. Bathrooms have shower stalls or shower/tub combos, and hairdryers are provided.

Street-facing rooms get more light and are more pleasant than those located at the back of the building, which do not have views and can be quite dark, but they get more street noise.
