Bottom Line

This gorgeous historic building often gets overlooked in the hustle and bustle of Herald Square, but with modern rooms, several dining options, and an interesting history (it’s the birthplace of the Professional Golfers Association), the Radisson is a solid mid-range option. The location may not be particularly attractive, but it is certainly convenient; the hotel sits right above eight subway lines, and is within walking distance of numerous sights. It’s worth comparing rates with the nearby Eventi, however, which boasts larger rooms and extra freebies.

Scene

This historic property attracts business and leisure travelers of all ages.

Situated at 32nd and Broadway, the hotel is surrounded by a lively throng of commuters and tourists. Stepping into the lobby, guests find a similarly bustling scene, but it’s more cheery than hectic. Foreign tourists, business travelers, and couples alike make use of the plush seating in the lobby, where a grand piano and intact historic features -- such as intricate tiling and an old mail shoot -- make for an upscale, if not particularly luxe, vibe.A concierge desk helps tourists plan outings and reservations, and the Martinique Cafe, which sits just off the lobby, sees an influx of tourists and business travelers during breakfast service. Both tourists and business travelers appreciate the hotel’s location, and many business travelers make use of the hotel’s numerous meeting spaces.

Location

Directly above eight subway lines

Just off of Herald Square, the Radisson Martinique sits in a bustling, less-than-attractive area of Midtown, nestled between Chelsea and Times Square. But what the neighborhood lacks in charm, it makes up for in convenience. The hotel sits directly above eight subway lines, and is less than a five-minute walk from the Empire State Building. It is also within easy reach of Penn Station, Madison Square Garden, Madison Square Park, and several other popular tourist destinations.

Rooms

Rooms are chain-like, with modern decor and amenities

Rooms at the Radisson aren’t particularly stunning, but they feature sleek decor (picture warm, neutral tones with pops of color) and up-to-date amenities; all come with flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, and free Wi-Fi. All also feature coffeemakers and large work desks, and some even boast views of the Empire State Building, although it is so close to the hotel you’ll have to crane your neck to get a good view of the top. Marble bathrooms are small but feel upscale, and closets come stocked with laptop-size safes and irons and ironing boards.Surprisingly, mini-fridges do not come standard and require an additional fee in basic rooms. Upgrading to Club Level means the inclusion of multiple perks such as larger rooms with sofas and wet bars, and access to the Club Lounge, which offers free breakfast and Wi-Fi.

Features

Numerous dining options are a plus; the small fitness center is a negative.

The hotel’s numerous dining options are popular among guests and visitors in the area. An affordable, and extensive, breakfast buffet offers a plethora of hot and cold items such as pancakes, French toast, eggs, bacon, cereal, pastries, and fruit, and Cafe Martinique serves a la carte options. The cafe remains open for lunch and dinner, during which its bar opens up, and Le Poulet, the hotel’s take on a French bistro, also serves lunch and dinner. Room service is available throughout the day. This Radisson attracts a large number of business travelers, and caters to them with ample meeting spaces, as well as a well-equipped business center. There is also an on-site fitness center, but split between two small rooms, and with just four cardio machines, it’s a bit disappointing.
