Trump International Hotel and Tower's Michelin three-star restaurant Jean Georges is one of the best in the world, and it's right on the ground floor. Prices are, unsurprisingly, steep -- running about $98 for a four-course dinner. The restaurant's more casual bar area, Nougatine, has a more affordable menu but the flair and service remain. Food from both of chef Jean Georges Vongerichten's menus can be ordered off the room service menu 24 hours a day (although the overnight menu is limited). The Gilt restaurant in the New York Palace Hotel serves inventive New American in a mind-blowing setting. Menu items include a special truffles and Fontina grilled cheese sandwich inspired by the TV show Gossip Girl',' which regularly films at the hotel. With enormous doors, carved ceilings, glittering chandeliers, and a modern sculpture in the bar area, Gilt is so visually stunning that the cuisine seems secondary. The bar is a popular spot, even among locals, and it stays open until 2 a.m. on the weekends. Kittichai, an upscale Thai restaurant inside the 60 Thompson hotel, received a "Critics Pick" from New York magazine and is considered one of the finest Asian restaurants in the city. Menu items at Kittichai include baby back ribs with chocolate and Thai spices or monkfish with hearts of palm and ginger curry. The dark, stylish dining room is anchored by a large reflective pool accented with floating candles and lily pads. At $30, the little-known, three-course pre-theater dinner menu served from 5:30 to 7 p.m. is a steal. There is also a $20 prix-fixe lunch menu. Esteemed chef Kerry Heffernan, who gained prominence running Eleven Madison Park, is the genius behind the modern American cuisine at South Gate. New York magazine recommends the shrimp with leeks, sauteed red snapper and pork belly at South Gate. Small squares of mirrors covering the ceiling and walls, the orange travertine bar, and views of Central Park South make for a cool, airy atmosphere. Kitano has a famous-among-the-locals Japanese restaurant called Nadaman Hakubai, and its traditional, $150 multi-course meal of kaiseki cuisine is not for unadventurous eaters or those light in the wallet. The New York Times wrote that "a visit to one of this restaurant's tatami rooms is like a quick trip to Japan." Dishes are served by kimono-clad waitresses and each is intended to introduce the coming season. Breakfast at 540 Park is a city institution. Gotham's power brokers and financiers -- such as Mayor Bloomberg and the Tisch family (who, incidentally, own the Loews hotel chain along with the NY Giants) -- have been known grab a coffee and an omelet in the handsome dining room. Lunch is also served. At night 540 Park transforms into Feinstein's at the Regency, a nightclub that showcases acts such as 1980s TV star Tony Danza, Tony award-winning actress Betty Buckley, and Michael Feinstein himself. Alex Hotel's in-house restaurant Riingo -- Japanese for apple -- is helmed by celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson. Riingo serves signature items like beer-braised short ribs ($15) or foie gras sushi ($8/piece). The hotel restaurant, Asiate, serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch alongside floor-to-ceiling windows and views of the park. Its delicious Asian cuisine is critically lauded in New York magazine but also quite expensive -- a simple breakfast for two can cost as much as $70. Then again, so few breakfasts come with an amuse-bouche in the form of a tasty blueberry smoothie shooter. For dinner, the restaurant offers only prix-fixe menus. The three-course prix fixe is $85, and the full, eight-course tasting menu is $125. The hip Hudson Cafeteria features an open kitchen, stocked pantries (for show), and soaring ceilings. Communal wooden tables and ornate, high-backed chairs make you feel like you're in an Ivy League dining hall. Peacock Alley, named for the socialite-filled promenade that linked the Waldorf and Astoria hotels more than a hundred years ago, sits in the hotel's North Lobby and serves brunch, lunch and small plates in the evening. The restaurant has seen many incarnations since opening in the 1960s. Old-world and iconic, the Carlyle Restaurant is a favorite among old-school socialites and local residents. The menu lies somewhere between American and French. Dining at The London is all about renowned chef Gordon Ramsay, who has two restaurants and a bar in the hotel. One of them, Gordon Ramsay at the London, holds two Michelin stars and serves French-inspired food (diver scallops with braised veal cheeks; duck breast with a red wine and fig glaze) in a fine dining setting.
