Bottom Line

The Ivy Lodge, a sprawling Victorian mansion turned upscale bed-and-breakfast, is a place where guests can relive the opulence of Newport’s Gilded Age -- from the stunning oak entryway to each of the inn’s 8 individually decorated rooms. The owners of the Ivy Lodge, a husband and wife team, go out of their way to ensure guests enjoy their visit to Newport by offering city getaway packages, discounted tickets to area attractions, and local restaurant recommendations. They also serve a hot gourmet breakfast each morning as well as tea, coffee, and snacks throughout the day, all of which are free for guests. Wi-Fi and parking are also free, and the inn is within walking distance of the Newport mansions and the famous Cliff Walk. However, there are few other amenities, and the traditional Victorian decor might not be to everyone’s taste.

Ivy Lodge

Scene

Like taking a step back in time to Newport’s Gilded Age

Walking through the front door of the Ivy Lodge is like taking a step back in time. The 33-foot solid oak entryway -- with its wrap-around interior balconies and stained glass windows -- is a Gothic masterpiece. Everything from the grand staircase to the imposing brick fireplace is a sight to behold. The atmosphere is quiet, as if guests are trying to maintain some sort of sacred silence as they pass through the halls. It’s mostly adults who stay at the Ivy Lodge, whether for an anniversary celebration or romantic getaway, but children are also welcome. Though there are few amenities here -- no pool, fitness center, or restaurant -- it seems that most guests are happy to spend their days cozying up by the fireplace, playing chess in the grand parlor, or enjoying a glass of wine on the gorgeous wrap-around porch.

Location

On a quiet residential street, near Newport mansions and the Cliff Walk

Located on a residential street off of Narragansett Avenue, it wouldn’t be hard to drive past the Ivy Lodge and assume it was a private home. The beautiful Victorian mansion resembles its neighbors, and only a tiny sign (that’s mostly blocked by hedges) denotes that it is, in fact, the Ivy Lodge. From the hotel, guests can easily stroll to the Cliff Walk’s Narragansett Avenue entrance or to the mansions on Bellevue Avenue. The shops and restaurants on Thames Street are five minutes away by car. Easton’s Beach and Second Beach are seven and nine minutes away by car, respectively. T.F. Green Airport is a 40-minute drive while the city of Providence is 50 minutes.

Rooms

Individually decorated, Victorian inspired, all with fireplaces

Each of the 8 rooms at the Ivy Lodge is individually decorated with Victorian-era antiques, period furnishings, and working fireplaces. They are also equipped with TVs (some flat-screen, others tube-style), individually controlled heat and air-conditioning units, and some have mini-fridges. The owners suggest calling the inn before making reservations so they can better understand guests’ individual needs and recommend a room that might work best. Also, it should be noted that the Ivy Lodge sees its fair share of return customers who book the same room at the same time each year, so when making reservations, it is best to call the hotel to see which rooms are available.

Library Room: The only room on the first floor, the Library Room is for guests who may not be able to navigate the inn’s many stairs. Just off the entryway, guests enter the Library Room via a secret doorway. The room is decorated in deep red tones, and features a separate shower and soaking tub.

Turret Room: The Turret Room is large, and unsurprisingly, adjacent to the mansion’s second floor turret. The grand four-poster, canopied bed, along with the golden walls and royal blue accents give the room a regal air. The bathroom features a two-person whirlpool tub, a double vanity, and a separate marble shower.

Victoria Room: The monochromatic Victoria Room is a favorite of bridal couples and honeymooners. Blonde woods and white accents give this second floor room an airy feel, while the four-poster bed adds an element of drama. The bathroom features a charming 1920s style toilet, as well as a whirlpool tub/shower combo.

Alcove Room: A tiny spot next to the Victoria Room, the Alcove Room can be closed off with its neighbor to create a family-friendly suite. The Alcove Room’s greatest feature is the alcove-style bed, a cozy nook enclosed by curtains. For such a small room, the bathroom is surprisingly large, but there’s no whirlpool or separate shower and tub, so it isn’t as luxe as others throughout the hotel.

Satterlee Suite: One of the inn’s larger rooms, the second floor Satterlee Suite is also ideal for families, as it has a king-size bed and a separate room with a trundle. There’s a sea-foam green and white motif carried throughout the room, from the bedding, to the patterned wallpaper, to the tile in the bathroom. The bathroom is large and has a double vanity and a two-person walk-in shower, but no tub.

Van Allen Room: A premium room on the second floor, the Van Allen Room features a large bay window that faces the street. There’s a large king-size bed, dark wood furniture, and a red and soft yellow damask paper on the walls. The bathroom has a two-person whirlpool tub, a double vanity, and a separate glass enclosed shower.

Pines Room: The Pines Room is a small room on the third floor. It faces the street and gets a great deal of sunlight during the day. The two-tone green striped wall paper is nicely accented by the white wood finishes and queen-size mahogany sleigh bed. The bathroom is small, but has a whirlpool tub/shower combo.

Trunk Room: Located on the third floor, the Trunk Room has low, sloping ceilings and a skylight. There is a king-size bed that can be converted into two twins, but for some reason a three-night minimum is required should guests choose the twin bed option. The Trunk Room has bright yellow and green tones, and even has a small sitting area. The bathroom has a whirlpool tub/shower combo and one vanity, but is fairly large in size.

Queen Anne Room: The largest room on the third floor, the Queen Anne Room is also ideal for families, as it features a king-size bed and a trundle. A green room with dark, Queen Anne style furniture, the Queen Anne room gets all day exposure from its east and west facing windows. The bathroom is large, but it doesn’t have a tub and there is only one vanity.

Free Wi-Fi, parking, and gourmet breakfast served each morning

The Ivy Lodge offers free Wi-Fi, and free parking in the small lot adjacent to the hotel. The inn’s best feature by far is its free, gourmet breakfast. Each morning, the owners prepare one hot item, such as eggs, pancakes, French Toast, or bread pudding. Along with the hot item, there is always homemade granola, freshly made breads and pastries, and fresh fruit. Tea and coffee are available for guests throughout the day, as well as a few seasonal snacks. Though there is no pool, fitness center, spa, or restaurant; the owners are happy to make recommendations or plan specialized activities with guests’ individual interests in mind.
