Adventure Suites

The hotel's attention to themed details is clear in the Victorian lobby, which is full of conversation pieces, like gnarled wooden chairs and a red British-style phone booth. A small lounging area off the reception desk has a leather couch and fireplace. Board games and the hotel's over 1,000 DVDs are displayed nearby on heavy wooden bookshelves. Though tricked-out suites make perfectly fine hiding places, guests here like to gather in the lobby, and around the fire pit. Photo ops are around every corner, in the 1950s-style diner and the outdoor hammock.

The suites are lined up next to each other. Even the exteriors of the units are themed, so it's obvious which is the Showtime suite and which is the Log Cabin suite. In back of the hotel, a paved brick path leads to a fire pit surrounded by an expanse of greenery. Adirondack chairs face the mountains in the distance.

Adventure Suites is located on White Mountain Highway, a busy road that can be difficult to cross for pedestrians. There is a cigar bar and hookah lounge that also serves beer and wine across the street, and a few restaurants are within walking distance. Beyond that though, a car is necessary for getting around. The hotel is an attraction in itself -- tours are available to those passing through -- but there are other nearby sights, as well. The hotel is located in North Conway, New Hampshire, a town known for its outlet mall and its proximity to White Mountain National Forest. Settlers' Green Outlet Shopping and Story Land theme park are less than a 10-minute drive from the hotel. Attitash and Cranmore Mountains are also attractive skiing options in the winter, and offer other outdoor activities in the summer.

Each of the 17 completely different units at Adventure Suites is over-the-top and luxurious, with Jacuzzis and full kitchens that have stainless steel appliances. Flat-screen TVs with DVD players and spacious bathrooms are standard, while some rooms also have Playstation consoles, fireplaces, and private terraces. Suites furthest from the lobby are the quietest.

The hotel doesn't take its themes half-heartedly, either. Each suite comes with some seriously cool details. Look carefully at the website (or ask for a tour of available rooms when you arrive) as amenities vary from suite to suite. There is a small putting range in the New York penthouse suite, a dance cage in the club suite, and a kid's tree fort in the treehouse suite. Several suites offer heart-shaped Jacuzzis. Suites also vary in size and the numbers of people they can accommodate. The club suite, for example, is two stories and can house 10 guests.

The features at Adventure Suites are designed to keep guests entertained. Outside, there's a large backyard with mountain views and a fire pit. S'mores ingredients can be purchased in the evenings. The hotel sets up a horseshoe pit in the summer, and an igloo and sledding in the winter. The hotel's DVD library -- available in the lobby -- has over one thousand different titles in all genres.

For breakfast, guests can make their own waffles topped with strawberries, toast bagels, or heat up breakfast sandwiches in the 1950s style diner. Coffee and cocoa are free throughout the day, and free popcorn and cookies are served in the evenings. There isn't an on-site restaurant, but evening room service is available (menu options are limited), and breakfast can be delivered to suites for a fee. There is an on-site gift shop, and candles, lotions, and bubble bath purchased off-site must be approved by management (extra cleaning fees may also apply). Wi-Fi is free, and pets are allowed in some of the suites for an additional fee.
