Bottom Line

Situated in the middle of Portrush's Main Street, Adelphi Portrush is an upper-middle-range boutique hotel, within walking distance of the town's beaches. The 28 rooms range in size from Standard Twin to Family to Executive Suite and include coffeemakers, safes, free Wi-Fi, and designer toiletries made from seaweed extract, though decor is fairly generic. The hotel also has a spa offering services such as massages, reflexology, manicures, and tanning, plus a steam room and sauna. An on-site bistro serves crowd-pleasing continental fare, and breakfast is included in the room rate. But the hotel's Main Street location does mean there's some surrounding noise. Travelers might want to also consider the Royal Court Hotel, a larger property with beautiful water views and comparable amenities for a slightly higher rates.

Adelphi Portrush

Scene

A neoclassical building with vintage details but bland modern updates

From the outside, the Adelphi Portrush resembles a turn-of-the-century neoclassical mansion. Iconic columns frame the doorways, flowers cascade down the windowsills, and gray-and-white moldings highlight the historic details. Inside, the run-of-the-mill modern furniture seems out of step with the once stately interior, which can be seen in the staircase's carved wood banister and spindles. A reception desk wedged underneath the stairs looks like a make-do solution. The spa and event space have natural wood details, but the crimson-and-white color palette used throughout the hotel feels a bit jarring.

Location

On Portrush's Main Street, on the Ramore Head peninsula

Adelphi Portrush is on a one-lane street in a town with few stop lights and about 6,000 inhabitants. Neighboring businesses include a vintage store, seamstress, barber, and other village boutiques. Portrush is often a stop along the scenic Causeway Coast that stretches along the north side of Ireland from Belfast to Derry-Londonderry, a route filled with towering cliffs and gushing waterfalls. The coast is about two blocks away from the Adelphi Portrush, and getting to East Strand Beach is about an 11-minute walk. The Royal Portrush Golf Club, which hosted the British Open in 1951, is about a six-minute drive. Next to the course is Kelly's Golf Links Hotel, the home of Lush!, one of the largest nightclubs in Northern Ireland, which has hosted DJs such as Fatboy Slim, Paul Van Dyk, and Tiesto. For family fun there's Barry's Amusements, the biggest amusement park in Northern Ireland, which is an eight-minute walk from the hotel. Belfast City Airport is about a 75-minute drive away.

Rooms

Rooms with generic decor, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi -- some with water views

The Adelphi Portrush's 28 rooms have generic decor, typical of many chain hotels. Blond-wood furniture, brass fixtures, white walls, and textiles in red or navy blue give a basic backdrop. Beds are comfortable, but kings are two twin mattresses pushed together. Standard Rooms have minimal lounge space; each has just one chair for sitting. King Seaview Rooms are larger, and have water views. All rooms come with electric kettles with coffee and tea supplies, safes, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms vary with room size -- Standard Rooms have only showers, while Suites have shower/tub combos. The Honeymoon Suite has a hot tub. Toiletries, which include seaweed extract, add a little touch of elegance.

Spa with a steam room and sauna, restaurant serving free breakfast, and a meeting room

Even though it's a small hotel, the Adelphia Portrush packs in the amenities. The on-site spa offers manicures, massages, and facials as well as a steam room and sauna. Breakfast is included in the room rate, and the on-site bistro also serves lunch and dinner. The menu leans toward pub fare such as burgers and steak and prawns.
