Battlesteads is
an eco-friendly, mid-range bed-and-breakfast set in a converted 18th-century farmstead.
While surrounded by pretty Northumbrian countryside, it can feel a little off
the beaten track and access would be tricky without a car. Rooms are mostly
pleasant and homey, though the bathrooms need work. Dining is excellent
and the homegrown ingredients used in the restaurant are certainly guaranteed to be fresh. Overall, it's
straightforward country lodging with a couple extras, though it does lack a little
in ambience.
Scene
Eco-friendly, converted 18th-century farmstead with dated interiors
Housed in a low-rise,
stone-built property, this converted 18th-century farmstead certainly looks
every inch the quaint village inn, complete with pretty floral adornments and
creeping ivy. Stepping inside the Battlesteads Hotel, the scene is slightly less
bucolic, with pastel walls and dated-looking signage that give off an institutional
-- rather than a cozy-rustic -- atmosphere. The couple who run the hotel have gone to great efforts to give the place particularly green
credentials. As well as solar paneling and electric car charging, the lodge
features its own extensive fruit and vegetable garden that supplies the kitchen with
fresh produce throughout the year. There are also a large lawn, a garden lined with
lavender, a snug
bar with exposed beams, and a log-burning stove, all of which combine to create a country-cozy vibe in the evening.
Location
Set in a small village surrounded by Northumbrian countryside
The hotel is set
in a small village surrounded by pretty Northumbrian countryside in the north
of England. While a bit off the beaten track (there's not even a cell phone signal),
there are scenic walking trails along the nearby North Tyne River. Guests wanting to go a little further afield can also opt for strolls along Hadrian’s Wall or Northumberland National Park, both 30 minutes away by car. It's about 45 minutes by road to both the Scottish border and
the city of Newcastle.
Rooms
Individually styled rooms with flat-screen TVs organic toiletries
The hotel has 22
individually decorated rooms that tend towards bright, homey styling with
patterned wallpaper and carpeted floors. All rooms come with flat-screen TVs with DVD players, while bathrooms are generally clean and
modern with showers over tubs and organic toiletries. Some bathrooms, however, look dated and could use a refresh. Rooms in the wood-slate lodge building add separate walk-in
showers, double basins, and jetted tubs. Dog-friendly rooms are also available.
Features
Full English breakfast and fine dining from homegrown ingredients
A full English
breakfast or cooked-to-order eggs are included in room rates and served in the
hotel's restaurant, which is also open for lunch and dinner and focuses on locally sourced and homegrown produce. An eight-course taster menu and an
impressive wine list are also available. The low-ceilinged bar serves drinks
and snacks in snug surrounds, while star-gazers have access to an on-site
observatory. While there's no cell phone signal, free Wi-Fi is available
throughout the hotel.
