Bottom Line

The 116-room Clarion Collection Hotel Havnekontoret is considered to be Bergen's top hotel, and for good reason -- it has elegant, sophisticated decor, a prime location near Bryggen and Bergenhus Fortress, and modern rooms with sultry style. Plus, guests get the usual perks that come with the business-oriented Clarion Collection chain -- not only free breakfast, but free afternoon waffles and a free light evening meal, which add enormous value. The adjacent Radisson Blu Royal completed renovations in 2012, however, and is now nipping at the Havnekontoret's heels -- but though its rooms are now arguably just as nice, the property is larger and feels more impersonal.

Clarion Collection Hotel Havnekontoret

Scene

Sophisticated, glamorous style and free meals

This luxury hotel on the water near Bryggen has glamorous, even sultry style. The elegant lobby has impressive crystal chandeliers, oversized royal purple chairs, and rich floor-to-ceiling curtains; the rooms also have some sexy style details such as royal purple fabrics. Some may find the rooms too dark, but others may like the dimly lit ambiance.

The hotel is housed in a historic neo-Baroque building, and there is beautiful interior stonework in the tower section of the hotel off the lobby. Guests can request a key card to visit the tower for panoramic views.

Though there is no full-service restaurant, the hotel does include free breakfast, afternoon waffles or pancakes, and a light evening buffet in the rate -- which adds enormous value, particularly in Norway where dining out is so expensive.

Location

On the harbor near Bryggen

The Clarion Collection Hotel Havnekontoret is on the harbor in between (and within easy walking distance of) Bryggen and Bergenhus Fortress. Other popular sights such as the Fish Market and the Floibanen Funicular are also within walking distance.

Bergen is one of Norway's most charming and appealing cities, with several well-preserved historic areas, museums, a wide shopping plaza, and the large, manicured Byparken with a pond, gardens, and a gazebo. Tourists flock to Bryggen, a former Hanseatic merchant area with colorful centuries-old wooden buildings (and some newer reconstructions). The Fish Market on the harbor is another popular spot, as is the Floibanen Funicular, which shuttles visitors to the top of a mountain for panoramic views of the city and harbors.

  • 4-minute walk to Bergenhus Fortress
  • 7-minute walk to the Fish Market
  • 7-minute walk to Floibanen Funicular
