Bottom Line

For guests that want to feel more like they're living in Hawaii than visiting, The Hula Breeze is a good choice. Situated in a private home, there are only three suites at this property, making for a restful retreat. Bright, airy rooms are fashioned with comfy bedding, kitchenettes, and modern amenities. The private bathrooms have showers only, but are kept spotless. An amazing white sand beach is just a short walk from the property. Families should note that kids under 10 aren't allowed.

The Hula Breeze

Scene

Super relaxed in a residential setting

If you've ever dreamed about running away and living in Hawaii, a stay at The Hula Breeze can give you a taste of what that might be like. The vibe here is chill; no agenda and no pressure seem to be the norm. In fact, while this property is an ideal starting point from which to venture out and see the island, it's also not atypical for guests to just enjoy lazy days at "home." Since there are no children under 10 allowed here and only three guest suites, The Hula Breeze does tend to have a more adult feel and is thus geared toward couples. The property itself looks like a private home in a residential neighborhood that happens to be surrounded by palm trees, and it's not uncommon to awaken to the sounds of singing birds, as there are many exotic varieties in the area. The owners are friendly and enjoy meeting the people who come to visit them from all over the world.

Location

In a quiet suburban neighborhood near downtown Kailua

Located in a lovely residential neighborhood, surrounded by nothing but other homes and flora and fauna, The Hula Breeze is just a five-minute drive from downtown Kailua, but even more importantly, the property is very close to some of Oahu's most stunning beaches. Guests can walk to Kailua Beach in less than 10 minutes. Lanikai Beach -- consistently mentioned as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world -- is a bit more than five minutes west by car, while Honolulu and Waikiki are about half an hour southwest. Many restaurants and a farmer's market are also within walking distance, but for exploring all Oahu has to offer, a rental car is recommended.

Rooms

Bright, airy, and clean with kitchenettes

There are three different suites from which guests can choose at The Hula Breeze -- the Pineapple, the Mango, and the Palm. The Palm is smaller than the Pineapple Suite and abuts the beach equipment and laundry area. Fortunately, the small number of guests here means the machines are not in use all the time, but the space may still be a bit noisier than other areas. The Mango Suite is probably the most private since it's on the opposite side of the house beyond the owner’s area.

Rooms are clean and well-maintained, with louvre windows and tropical breezes flowing easily through the suites. (Some might consider this a security risk since there are no in-room safes and windows are open.) Ceiling fans also help with room circulation, and guests can request air-conditioning units for an extra nightly fee. Kitchenettes include refrigerators, microwaves, coffeemakers, and hot plates. Free in-room Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs give a homey vibe. Beds are comfy with high-quality linens, and bathrooms are spotless. While there are no bathtubs, showers have decent water pressure.
