Bottom Line

The two-and-a-half pearl Waikiki Park Heights is a condominium with most units rented out for short stays by the friendly staff at Unipack. Other individual owners complicate the scene, renting out condos that offer a mixed decor and varying degrees of cleanliness. All rooms have bathrooms with curious Japanese soaking tubs and private balconies. The building itself is well maintained but heavily dated with few on-site amenities aside from the outdoor pool and an unaffiliated fine-dining steak house.

Unipack at the Waikiki Park Heights

Scene

Retro Hawaiian highrise with '70s flair

Built in 1978, the Waikiki Park Heights is still straight out of the ‘70s, with a few more modern touches from the ‘80s. The quiet lobby, with its alcove wooden reception area, is an odd mix of vintage cool and tacky blandness as seen by the tropical print lounge furniture paired alongside sleek white cylinder tables. The clashing design is best exhibited above, with a slightly discolored drop ceiling all but hiding an original recessed lighting feature -- a captivating work of art -- lined with rich wood panels.

Location

Centrally located on Kuhio Avenue, near beach and other attractions

Unipack at the Waikiki Park Heights is located on busy Kuhio Avenue, near the center of Waikiki. The beach is less than a five-minute walk west and there are several restaurants nearby, including Hula Grill Waikiki and chain venue The Cheesecake Factory. Honolulu Zoo is around a 10-minute walk south while just three blocks away is the touristy Kalakaua Avenue, a busy stretch of shops, restaurants, and high-rise hotels that cuts across Waikiki. Diamond Head and Ala Wai golf courses are both less than a 10-minute drive (in opposite directions) from the hotel and Honolulu International Airport is a 20- to 25-minute cab ride northwest.

Rooms

Condos with kitchens and Japanese style tubs

The Waikiki Park Heights condos held by Unipack, who manages the building, are all similarly decorated, though travelers should note that the building's other rental condos held by outside owners may vary widely in decor and amenities. The white walls and blue/gray carpets are tied together (or not) by a soft floral print that covers beds and couches. Sitting areas include wooden coffee tables and TV cabinets that don't quite match chairs and dining tables. Kitchenettes have microwaves and two-burner ranges near sinks and full-sized refrigerators. Larger condos feature full kitchens with ovens and rice cookers. The bathrooms have tiled Japanese ofuro tubs -- which are characteristically short, but deep for soaking and relaxing -- with separate standing showers fitted with handheld showerheads. All rooms also have small private balconies, most with views toward the ocean.

Features

Outdoor pool, guest laundry, and adjacent fine-dining steak house

Though it lacks most familiar hotel features, including a 24-hour front desk, the Waikiki Park Heights does have around-the-clock security and guest laundry facilities. The heated outdoor saltwater pool is on the small side, with a sun deck that has loungers and a few umbrella-covered tables. There's no breakfast offered here, but Hy’s Steak House occupies part of the building. A Waikiki institution for more than 35 years, it does old-school tableside preparations, from the more mundane classic Caesar salad to a pyrotechnic bananas Foster. The restaurant is known for grilling with native kiawe wood, which adds a distinctly Hawaiian fragrance to its aged beef.
