Bottom Line

Families looking for a quiet, relaxing getaway at a hotel that’s low on frills but high on value will be drawn to Ocracoke Harbor Inn. There are several different types of guest units available among the 16 rooms and seven suites, some with balconies, kitchens, and multiple bedrooms; decor is dated. Cottage rentals are available as well. Views of Silver Lake Harbor, on which the inn is located, are phenomenal. The inn is within walking distance of dining and shopping options in Ocracoke Village, while golf cart and bike rentals are available as well.

Ocracoke Harbor Inn

Scene

A laid-back family-friendly property that puts a premium on peace and quiet

With a laid-back island feel and a dominant color scheme of sea green for its exterior, Ocracoke Harbor Inn is a favorite of budget-minded families. The venue makes an effort to create a peaceful environment throughout the grounds, going so far as posting signs to respect the “quietude,” meaning no loud noises after 10 pm. The small reception area is little more than a desk flanked by wooden decor, adjacent to the breakfast room -- which has a few tables, a microwave, a refrigerator, and coffee-making supplies.

Location

Situated on an island where visitors can explore a range of activities, attractions, and restaurants

Located on Silver Lake Harbor in Ocracoke Village, the inn is ideally situated for exploring the island, which guests can only access via ferry or private boat or plane. Most of what a traveler would want to see is within walking distance of the property, which is surrounded by condos and other hotels. The island offers an array of activities ranging from parasailing to kayaking to sightseeing boat tours, with the area known for its relatively untouched landscapes. Historic attractions include the lighthouse and preservation museum, and visitors can also check out dining spots like Back Porch Restaurant and Flying Melon, both within walking distance of the inn.

Rooms

Simple, clean, and spacious units, some with balconies and hot tubs

Sixteen rooms and seven suites feature air-conditioning, hairdryers, refrigerators, coffeemakers, telephones, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi. Suites all have private balconies and kitchenettes as well as bathrooms with whirlpool tubs. All rooms are non-smoking and no pets are allowed. Rooms are also generally clean and spacious, regardless of category, though the spaces on the first floor are reported to have a musty smell at times. Decor is uniform throughout, featuring a dated look of white walls and wicker and wood furnishings, as well as green carpeting and floral bed coverings.

The Ocracoke also offers six rental cottages in two- and three-bedroom configurations. Units include options like Morning Star, Margaritaville, and Dad’s Retreat, offering different highlights depending on the space.

Features

Few amenities to speak of, though still a charming property

Though the Ocracoke lacks the amenities of a chain property -- there’s no fitness center or spa, for example -- the inn is nonetheless charming, with amenities that are perfectly suited to a simple, quiet Outer Banks vacation. Visitors can dock their boats free with advance reservations and the hotel also has a gas grill for guest use. Bike and golf cart rentals are available at the front desk, and there’s self-service laundry and free Wi-Fi as well.
