As with many time-share properties, the appeal of this 901-room hotel is in its massive, apartment-style suites. In addition to rooms with fully equipped kitchens, separate living rooms, and washer/dryers, Marriott's Grand Chateau also has a great location just a five- to 10-minute walk from the center of the Strip. Planet Hollywood is right across the street, with its huge shopping and restaurant complex. While most of the guests are time-share owners or members of the Marriott Rewards program, you don't have to be either to book here. Families and large groups should consider this option, especially if location is a high priority.

Walking into The Platinum Hotel and Spa’s subdued lobby, you’d never know you were only one block away from the Las Vegas Strip. Here, there’s no gambling, no smoking, and nothing over the top. Even though there’s no casino, The Platinum has enough nice amenities to keep guests occupied. The indoor/outdoor rooftop pool has incredible Strip views, and is a popular spot to hang out, even for non-swimmers, though the tiny on-site spa pales in comparison to its grandiose peers on the Strip. The 8,000 square feet of meeting and event space makes the Platinum is a popular spot for business travelers seeking peace and quiet. The 255 enormous suites are subtle and sophisticated, with full kitchens and huge living rooms.

Near the Las Vegas Convention Center, SpringHill Suites is a mid-range chain hotel that's convenient for conventioneers or those just looking for a stay away from the incessant hustle of the Strip. The 296 spacious rooms come with mini-fridges, microwaves, 37-inch flat-screen HDTVs, and free Wi-Fi. Property features include a restaurant serving American fare and a free breakfast buffet, a rooftop pool and fire pit, and a fitness center with a range of modern equipment.

Built in the mid-90s, the 322-room Hampton Inn Tropicana is a value hotel that's suitable for both business and leisure travelers, thanks to an on-site bar, outdoor pool with adjacent hot tub, and its proximity to the airport and the Strip (plus the hotel offers free shuttles to both). Rooms have work desks, coffeemakers, and flat-screen TVs; they lack mini-fridges, but their rates include a hot and cold breakfast.

The vibe at this 787-suite time-share resort is so mellow, you might forget you're in Sin City. The scene is more Florida condo community than Las Vegas glitz, especially since the closest Vegas attractions are a 20-minute walk away (luckily, there are free, twice-hourly shuttle to the Strip). The campus of apartment buildings and beautifully laid-out pools is sprawling but not overwhelming, with golf carts to shuttle guests around. Daily organized activities for all ages make it family-friendly to the extreme.

The 118 modern, apartment-style rooms at this extended-stay hotel come equipped with flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers, sofa beds, and free Wi-Fi, and -- in the case of one-bedroom suites -- full stainless-steel kitchens. There is no full-service bar or restaurant on-site, but there are outdoor grills for guest use and and the hotel offers a free breakfast. Other property features include 24-hour fitness and business centers, a pool, and two whirlpools.

Tahiti Village is an upper-middle-range time-share property with a Polynesian theme. The tropical decor is a little kitschy, but the 800 one- and two-bedroom suites are clean and spacious, and all have kitchenettes or full kitchens. Rates are reasonable considering the array of features (including a spa), many of which other time-share properties off the Strip often lack. This property is very family-friendly, with a lazy river, weekly luau, and kids' activity room.

The 648-room Holiday Inn Club Vacations Las Vegas is a low-key, family-friendly property with reasonably priced one- and two-bedroom suites located a block away from the Las Vegas Strip. Rooms are big and well-equipped with kitchens, balconies, living rooms, and washer/dryers. With five pools, there's never a shortage of lounge chairs. A free shuttle connects guests to and from nearby casinos and and there's free Wi-Fi and free parking, but there are no elevators and guests that want daily cleaning must pay an extra fee.

In both presentation and function, Desert Paradise Resort is more like a condo community than a Vegas resort, with a leisurely pace and 148 one- and two-bedroom apartments, each equipped with a full kitchen, living room, small dining room, and washer/dryer. Outdoor space includes a line of grills for guest use and two pools among clusters of apartments. The family pool has a waterfall and a nearby splash pad/play place for younger kids. The adult pool is a bit smaller, but still sizable, and offers a quieter place for those without kids to relax. On-site parking is free, and Wi-Fi is available for a fee.

The 716-room Tuscany Suites and Casino can be summed up thusly: no-frills but large suites, clean pools, affordable restaurants, and low rates. The 15-building complex is more utilitarian than stylish, but it offers great value with its free gym, parking lot, and in-room Wi-Fi. Plus, rooms start at 625 square feet, making them as spacious as rooms in some of the most luxurious hotels in Vegas. The hotel's other amenities -- two small pools and a hot tub and a locally loved casino -- don't dazzle, but they're nice conveniences.

"Huge" doesn't really begin to describe the 2,163-room South Point Casino and Spa, a suburban self-contained resort with everything one could ever need on a trip to Vegas, including 11 restaurants, a pool, and even a movie theater and an equestrian center. Yes, there's plenty to do, but there's no kitschy theme like most of the hotels on The Strip, nor is there the history of the downtown hotels. Built in 2005, the hotel promises, in its shiny gold-colored windows, a more relaxing alternative to the bustling, party-hardy Strip. Sure, the gambling goes on until all hours, and the bowling alley is open 24/7, but there's no nightclub for the younger crowd to dance the night away. Instead of the party set, the hotel caters to a mix of families, retirees, and locals. Rooms are large and comfortable, but decor is a tad bland, and the cheapest units overlook a parking lot.

Tucked a few blocks behind the Strip, Desert Rose Resort may be off the radar of most Vegas visitors. Yet it's well worth considering for its affordable apartment-style suites with kitchens, separate dining areas, balconies, and free Wi-Fi. And though it's close to the action of the Strip, Desert Rose has a quiet and relaxing feel, making it a good choice for families, or any group that wants the option to cook dinner in-house. But for a resort with 284 suites and a large contingent of families, crowding at the small pool can be problem. The pool deck also houses two whirlpools and two partially shaded barbecue areas that are free to use on a first-come basis.

The 300-room Silverton Hotel and Casino ample entertainment ranges from its own casino to a live entertainment venue to a large aquarium with mermaid shows and fish feedings. There are 10 different restaurants and bars (including some open 24 hours), plus an outdoor pool and an attached Bass Pro Shop. Two room types offer a choice of rustic, or modern decor with work desks and safes, but lack conveniences such as coffeemakers and some have old tube-style TVs. Fees, which can easily stack up for those wanting mini-fridges or pool cabanas, are a notable downside too.

Grandview at Las Vegas is a massive family-friendly time-share complex next to South Point Hotel and Casino. Each of the 1,516 apartment-style suites has a full kitchen washer/dryer, and whirlpool tub, but there's a lot of variety in quality and decor. The family-friendly hotel has five outdoor pools, including a kids' pool with water features, as well as mini-golf and a large indoor game room. The only dining option is a small take-out deli, however -- surprising, considering Grandview's scale.
