Bottom Line

The Bay Lodging Resort is a laid-back hotel at the end of a quiet residential block, far enough from downtown to avoid late night noise, but still a short golf cart ride to most attractions. There's a small indoor pool with a connected seasonal outdoor pool and bar, along with free continental breakfast. The several rooms types to choose from include suites with microwaves, and split-level apartments with kitchens that are ideal for large groups, though none will win any awards for their decor. For more extensive facilities check the rooms at the nearby Put-in-Bay Resort Hotel and Conference Center.

Oyster Hotel Review

Bay Lodging Resort

Scene

Casual lodging with Ohio State Buckeyes decor

The hotel appears to fit well into it's residential neighborhood, with its vinyl-sided buildings and simple mowed lawn, until you notice the fake palm trees dotting the poolside patio. The outdoor bar area is covered in Ohio State Buckeyes logos giving the "resort" more of a college sports bar vibe, with a cheery red-and-white striped awning providing shade for summer libations near the pool. Game day events not withstanding, it's quiet compared to the other hotels on the island, tucked along a shady lane that leads to the harbor.

Location

On a quiet residential block, walking distance to downtown

The hotel is at the end of a residential block surrounded by houses, but walking distance to restaurants and quaint local pubs. Put-in-Bay is the largest town and a popular holiday destination on South Bass Island, where walleye and perch fishing are popular pursuits. Golf Carts are the primary method of transportation, while an armada of ferries shuttle people between the islands and Sandusky harbor on the mainland. The hotel is within a 10-minute walk of Lake Erie Islands Historical Society, and Squaw Harbor. A five-minute golf cart ride away is the towering Perry's Victory & International Peace Memorial, commemorating the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812.

Rooms

Basic rooms and split-level apartments with kitchens

The Bay Lodging Resort's 50 units range from small standard rooms with one (king) or two (queen) beds, to split-level apartments that can accommodate up to 10 guests. There are also narrow triple rooms for six people, all with a budget chain-style decor. We found a strong scent of cleaning products in the apartments and stale odors in some of the other rooms, many of which have stained carpets. Small work desks with roller chairs come standard, along with mini-fridges and flat-screen TVs. Two-bedroom suites and the split-level apartments add small dining areas and full kitchens with coffeemakers, microwaves, and ovens with stovetops. The bathrooms have standard shower/tub combos.

The small indoor pool room has a hot tub and connects to the seasonal outdoor pool through a doorway-sized channel, with a Buckeyes mascot emblazoned on the bottom. Loungers crowd the sun deck with a few red high-top tables delineating the Buckeye Tiki Bar's patio. The small outdoor bar sits at the corner of the building with a couple wall-mounted flat-screen TVs under its awning. Free continental breakfast is served in the small lobby and the hotel has on-site golf cart rentals with hourly and daily rates.
