Bottom Line

The three-pearl Phoenix Condominiums West is a lovely high-rise complex located directly on Orange Beach. Its 225 units are spacious and well-maintained, with fully equipped kitchens, washer/dryer sets, and covered balconies that overlook the beach. The one- to four-bedroom units are individually decorated and that attract everyone from retired snow birds to large extended families. Multiple pools on-site include a meandering lazy river and a heated indoor pool with an adjacent whirlpool. A tennis court and covered parking are welcome amenities, but beach chair rentals are pricey. There isn't a restaurant or bar on-site and at 28 stories, wait times at the four elevators can be long. Rates are competitive, but the mid-range Sugar Beach offers beachfront condos at lower rates on most dates.

Phoenix Condominiums

Scene

A busy, family-oriented resort filled with beach lovers

The spacious condos in this high-rise complex make it a magnet for extended-family beach vacations during the warm months and a comfortable setting for retired snow birds in the winter. The large lobby is decorated with beige tile floors and leads to a spectacular atrium that soars all the way up to the 28th floor. Several tasteful sitting areas are located in the lobby, including clusters of brown leather sectional sofas and round dining tables placed along with nicely upholstered chairs. Tropical plants in large planters are set throughout the lobby that includes nice nautical-theme artwork and a large reception desk that's staffed daily. Despite the impressive vertical views, guests don’t tend to linger in the lobby, preferring to get outside to the marquee attractions -- the beach and three pools.

Rooms

Spacious, individually decorated condos with full kitchens and covered balconies

These spacious condos are individually owned and as such, they vary widely in style and size. The units that we saw were tastefully decorated in a style that incorporates a casual, beachy lifestyle. Generally, expect to see light-wood furniture, floral-pattern bedspreads, light earth-tone walls, and tile or laminate floors in shades of earth tones. Beach or nautical accents are often used for artwork on the walls and tables. The fully equipped kitchens typically have granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, and a bar set with stools. Bathrooms can vary widely in style, size, and furnishings, from more upscale walk-in showers with clear glass doors and adjacent whirlpool tubs to simple acrylic shower/tub combos. Some have granite vanities while others are more modest acrylic. Expect to see multiple flat-screen TVs, with some accompanied by DVD players. Washer/dryer sets are standard. All units offer beach views from covered balconies that are large enough for a table and chairs. As is often seen in large vacation rental complexes with individual owners, guests have reported that some units lacked thorough cleaning and general upkeep.
