The Tides Laguna Beach

Built in 1949, the Tides Inn, while adding modern conveniences, has retained a quaint charm. It exudes an eclectic, beachy vibe and fosters an intimate sense of community among its guests, who are encouraged to mingle -- nightly guest parties are held by the outdoor stone fireplace. Shrubs, trees, and trellises with vines surround the exterior, while the small, homey lobby has tan tile, floral armchairs, green walls, brochures, and sea-inspired gewgaws. Free coffee, tea, and newspapers are available. Open-air hallways have white railings and seashell mats throughout. The outdoor fireplace and barbecue area, which also has a bar, provides plenty of cozy seating.

The Tides Inn is centrally located, with Heisler Park and Laguna Art Museum within a five-minute walk. Main Beach Park, restaurants, and shops are within a 10-minute walk, while Fashion Island is within a 15-minute drive. The Irvine Spectrum Center, South Coast Plaza, and Newport Pier are 20 minutes away by car, as are John Wayne Airport and Mission San Juan Capistrano.

All 21 rooms are homey and individually decorated in earth tones. Local artists crafted the nautical art pieces, and each room is themed according to the quotes on the walls, which range from humorous to philosophical. Tile or wood floors go with the white bedspreads, and floral fabrics are used throughout. Furniture is wicker or dark or white wood, and vintage armchairs provide extra seating. All rooms have air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, Keurig coffeemakers, mini-fridges, and daily housekeeping. Some rooms have kitchenettes with sinks, toasters, microwaves, and full-size refrigerators, while others have skylights and patios or balconies with partial ocean views. Stylish bathrooms -- some of which are small -- include scalloped curtains and original tile (pinks, grays, whites), and tan tile floors match the tan walls. Some shower/tubs have fish mural tiles, while other bathrooms are small. All provide Gilchrist and Soames toiletries. Guests complain that some rooms receive traffic noise. 

A delightful, saltwater, oval outdoor pool has shooting fountains and pool toys, as well as a bar-style space with green and blue stools. Nightly guest gatherings take place near the outdoor fireplace and barbecue areas, both of which have seating, and plenty of potted plants. Free loaner beach chairs and towels, and free Wi-Fi are provided, in addition to free outdoor parking. Be aware that the front desk closes early in the evening, and not all rooms can accommodate pets. Fees for pets (two are allowed per room) are based on weight. Current vaccination records are required, and pets cannot be left alone in rooms.
