Bottom Line

The Salishan Spa and Golf Resort is a four-pearl beach property that attracts golfers and spa-lovers, including plenty of Portlanders in search of a weekend break from city life. The 205 rooms are spread out across multiple buildings and have balconies or terraces with views of the forest, golf course, or Siletz Bay. However, while the facilities generally get good reviews, there have been complaints of worn furnishings in rooms. The 18-hole golf course and the spa are the star attractions here, but there's also a fitness center, indoor pool, tennis court, and five bars and restaurants. There are several hotels nearby, but none offer as extensive facilities as the Salishan.

Salishan Resort

Scene

Golf and spa resort popular with vacationers and conference groups

Salishan Spa and Golf Resort is a beachfront golf resort that attracts spa and golf vacationers -- many of whom are in from Portland and other Oregon cities -- as well as conference groups and wedding parties in the summer months. The hotel has a quintessential Oregon beach-lodge look from the outside, with tan exteriors and sloping roofs supported by stone pillars. This woods-meets-beach aesthetic continues inside the hotel, where the lobby has stone flooring, a huge stone fireplace, large windows that overlook surrounding trees, and neutral-hued sofas and tables. A baby grand piano adds a touch of elegance to the folksy space. There's also a library area with a chessboard table and a full set of Encyclopedias Britannica, adding a scholarly touch.

Salishan Spa and Golf Resort is located on the Oregon Coast in Gleneden Beach, a 15-minute drive south of Lincoln City at the southern end of the Siletz Bay National Wildlife Refuge. There's not much within walking distance, however, so a car is necessary. Newport, home to the Oregon Coast Aquarium, is a half-hour drive away. It's a two-and-a-half hour-drive to Portland, two hours to Eugene, and about an hour and 20 minutes to Salem, the state capital.

Variety of rooms and suites with balconies and forest, golf course, or ocean views

The Salishan offers a range of rooms and suites, all of which have a similar neutral color scheme that can be seen throughout the hotel. Amenities common to all room types include flat-screen TVs, microwaves, mini-fridges, bathrobes, free Wi-Fi, and private balconies. Adjoining rooms can also be arranged, and pets are allowed in certain units. The most affordable rooms are the Traditional Rooms, which sit near the main lodge and come with one king or two doubles, plus they have forest or golf-course views. The next level up are the Deluxe Rooms, which have seating areas with sofa beds in addition to king-size beds. Premier Rooms are the largest and come with huge bathrooms and seating areas with sofa beds. Bathrooms have ample granite vanities, toiletries, and shower/tub combos.

The property also offers three suites. The Sunset Suite is the largest and has a king bed and two queens, a huge jetted tub in the bathroom, and a stone-flanked gas fireplace. The Executive Suite sleeps four and has a king bed and a queen Murphy Bed along with a jetted tub and a wood-burning fireplace. The Canyon Suite only sleeps two and is most suitable to newlyweds and honeymooners, with a double walk-in shower and a whirlpool hot tub.

Luxury spa, 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, fitness center, kids' activities, and multiple restaurants

The spa is among Salishan's major selling points and has beautiful views over Siletz Bay. Amenities include saunas and steam rooms in the men's and women's locker rooms as well as a common whirlpool hot tub. Body treatments and facials are available along with a wide range of massages, including hot-stone therapy and side-by-side couples' massages. The salon also offers hair services as well as face and body waxing.

The Salishan's 18-hole par 71 golf course is surrounded by beautiful old-growth forest. There's also a pro shop with sportswear and equipment along with an on-site bar and grill. The fitness room offers cardio and weight-training equipment and there's a long indoor swimming pool with an adjacent whirlpool hot tub. Travelers seeking outdoor activities will find a tennis court (though there's a fee to use it) along with a Bocce court, beach volleyball and basketball facilities, and an 18-hole putting course that's a hit with families. Other family-friendly amenities include a jungle gym and special s'mores parties in the summer season.

Dining options at Salishan are plentiful for a property of this size. Along with the Grill at the Golf Clubhouse, there's a deli serving local produce, pizzas, wine, and baked goods. The Attic Lounge serves light bites and has more of a pub scene, with themed happy hours on weeknights, live entertainment on weekends, and free billiards. The Sun Room is the most family-friendly option, with large picture windows overlooking the property. The most upscale and romantic spot to eat is the Dining Room, which offers a huge wine list, lots of fresh seafood, steaks, and even private dining for weddings and corporate events.
