I-Drive Grand Resort & Suites

I-Drive Grand Resort & Suites looks and feels like a budget chain hotel, though it might be quieter than most. Palm trees and a water fountain with sculpted figures stand in front of the hotel's sign out front. The lobby is one of the most attractive areas of the property with a wooden ceiling and hanging chandeliers. Oversize brown leather sofas and several tables with chairs offer a spot to hang out. Statues of Jake and Elwood Blues from the movie "The Blues Brothers," are a fun and unexpected touch. The outdoor swimming pool is rarely crowded, but that may have something to do with the weathered state of the sun loungers and tiki bar.

The hotel is in the main entertainment district of International Drive, giving guests who stay here fast access to restaurants and the Orlando Premium Outlets. The Orange County Convention Center is three miles from the hotel while Wet n' Wild water park is within walking distance at three blocks away. Parking, which can be a problem in this part of Orlando, is ample and free. There's a free scheduled shuttle bus taking guests to and from Walt Disney World Resort and Orlando Studios.

The 336 rooms at I-Drive Grand Resort & Suites are simple and nicely sized for this price point, but most are in need of new furniture and a good scrubbing. Flat-screen TVs, microwaves, and coffeemakers are standard -- as are mini-fridges. The decor is a mishmash of clashing colors and textures with bright floral bed coverlets, the occasional white Eames style desk chair, and blue geometric carpet. Bathrooms aren't half bad, especially the ones with black tiles. Shower/tub combinations are covered with a plastic curtain. Note that there isn't an elevator so those with mobility issues should book first floor rooms. Swimming pool views are the most pleasant.

The fitness center on-property includes several LifeFitness cardio machines and a weight bench, though there aren't any further amenities like bottled water or towels. The outdoor swimming pools (a main pool and a children's pool) have plastic sun loungers and a few tables with umbrellas and chairs. There's an adjacent tiki bar but it's in rough condition and the hours aren't posted. The gift shop is almost overflowing with Disney novelties, packaged snacks, and toiletries. Wi-Fi is free. A basic continental breakfast is provided, though it's surprising the hotel doesn't have an on-site restaurant as most budget hotels in Orlando do. Check out the Rosen Inn at Pointe Orlando for a 24-hour cafe and coffee shop.
