Bottom Line

The Point Orlando Resort is an upper-middle-range option in a great location just off International Drive, close to Universal Studios. The classically sharp apartments come with kitchenettes or full kitchens, and larger apartments add washer/dryers. Some rooms have balconies with views of the Universal fireworks in the evening. The heated outdoor pool is a favorite hangout spot, and there's also a small fitness center. Dining includes a breakfast buffet, a tapas place, and a pool bar. Unfortunately, the free shuttle to Universal, Epcot, and SeaWorld isn't as frequent as many guests would like. Families looking for more kid-friendly features could check out the Mystic Dunes Resort & Golf Club, which has four pools, a waterslide, mini-golf, and a golf course, but it's farther from the action.

The Point Hotel & Suites

Scene

Polished apartment-style hotel with a quiet vibe, though little on-site for kids

In an area that often seems readymade for families with kids, The Point has a more refined, quiet vibe, with its handsome apartments and condo-style layout. There aren't a ton of bells and whistles here, and its best for travelers who like the conveniences of being able to self-cater. Style throughout the hotel is sharp, if classic. The lobby is open and bright, with a black-and-white tile floor and a sparkling chandelier overhead. A few chairs provide seating, as well as a bar area with stools, though it's rarely ever rowdy. In fact, the most popular spot for hanging out is by the pool, where there's an additional bar and lounge seating. Again, though, the vibe stays quite calm. With its reasonable rates and quiet location so close to the action, the hotel attracts all sorts of guests, including families and couples. However, those traveling with younger kids might find the features lacking and ambience a bit more buttoned up.

Location

Located a block off International Drive, close to Universal Studios

This hotel is located a block off International Drive, a five-minute drive from Universal Studios. There are numerous restaurants and shops in the area, all of which cater almost exclusively to tourists. The Orlando Eye is a five-minute drive south of the hotel. The Point's free shuttle runs to SeaWorld, Epcot, and Universal Studios, though it's scheduled, can be infrequent, and trips take longer than using your own car or hiring a cab. It's a 10-minute drive to Universal's Volcano Bay water park (opening in May 2017), 15 to 25 minutes to Disney World's parks, and 15 minutes to SeaWorld. Orlando International Airport is about a 20-minute drive from the hotel.

Rooms

Handsome apartments with kitchenettes or kitchens, some with balconies and fireworks views

The hotel offers studios with kitchenettes and one- and two-bedroom suites with full kitchens and washer/dryers. Decor is handsome, with neutral color schemes of beige and cream, light patterned carpeting, medium-toned wood furniture, and granite countertops. Gold accents on bedding add a splash of subtle color, and the look overall blends classic and modern details. Studios feature a partially separate living area, and all rooms have sofa beds. The largest apartments can sleep up to eight people.

Amenities include flat-screen TVs in living areas and bedrooms, air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and safes. Beds feature Sealy mattresses with gel-infused foam. Kitchens are furnished with utensils, dishes, cookware, and everything needed for cooking and dining. Coffeemakers are by Keurig (coffee is free), and appliances are all up-to-date. Bathrooms also have granite countertops, as well as shower/tub combos, hairdryers, and toiletries. Higher-category apartments have separate tubs and showers. Some units have a balcony or terrace, and some overlook the pool. According to some guests, the best units look out over the city, with Universal's fireworks visible at night.

Features

Pool bar, heated outdoor pool and hot tub, and fitness center, though infrequent free shuttle

As this hotel isn't the best choice for families with young kids, don't expect lots of features for the little ones here. However, families with teenagers and adult couples and groups of friends are generally pleased. Guests can start their day with an American-style breakfast buffet at Barista in the lobby, though it's not included in room rates. The Evo Lounge & Tapas Bar serves small plates and drinks in the evening, though it didn't seem popular during our visit. The Cabana Bar & Grill by the pool offers burgers, sandwiches, and other light fare as well as drinks for lunch and dinner. It's a lively space with lounge and bar seating.

The large, heated outdoor pool is surrounded by tall palm trees and a stone deck. Aqua-colored lounge chairs line the deck, and there's a hot tub, too. An outdoor billiard table provides entertainment. The small fitness center has cardio machines with individual TVs, plus a small selection of weight-training equipment. Events spaces can accommodate gatherings of various sizes. A business center in the lobby offers two computers and a printer for guests to use.

Keep in mind that there's a daily resort fee that covers shuttle service, in-room coffee service, parking, use of the fitness center, and Wi-Fi. However, guests generally find that the scheduled shuttle isn't frequent enough, and that trips take a lot longer than using your own car or a taxi.
