Shin-Osaka Station Hotel Honkan

There isn't much to say about this simple property, which works best for travelers on the go. The style is basic and a little old school, an impression that starts in the lobby, which is spacious and businesslike, with tables and chairs for seating, as well as a couple of sofas where guests can hang out. Aside from the breakfast room, there aren't many places to unwind and this isn't exactly the kind of hotel where people linger for hours. It stays busy with travelers coming and going, and luggage is often lined up along the wall in the lobby. Travelers who need easy access to Shin-Osaka Station are the most frequent guests, and it attracts all types: families, couples, groups, individuals, and businesspeople.  

This hotel is situated in a relatively residential area about a four-minute walk from the Shin-Osaka JR station, which is a hub for the metro as well. Restaurants and convenience stores are within walking distance. Osaka Castle is about 20 minutes away by car, or 45 minutes by public transportation, and Universal Studios Japan is a 30- to 35-minute drive. Kansai International Airport is about an hour away, and Itami Airport is about a 20-minute drive or 35 minutes away by public transportation. Many travelers to Osaka will make their way to Kyoto, which is a 45-minute ride away by train.

Rooms are tiny and basic, with white bed coverings, white walls, blonde wood furniture, and beige carpeting. Decoration is minimal, and the look -- like much of the hotel -- is a bit old school. Standard features include air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, free Wi-Fi, kettles for tea and coffee, free bottled water, and hairdryers. Bathrooms are reminiscent of those found on airplanes, except that they have compact showers and come with Japanese-style toilets and toiletries in large eco-friendly bottles. Robes and slippers are provided. Connecting rooms with more beds are available for families and groups, and women-only rooms also are available (which include additional bath products). 

Features are slim at this budget property, which is expected, as most travelers use it as a one-night base before a commute. Breakfast is available for a fee, and guests can choose between Western and Japanese fare. It's served in the sunny, casual dining room. Floor-to-ceiling windows allow in lots of natural light, and doors lead to a lovely brick terrace where guests can dine in nice weather. A coin-operated laundry room has four sets of stacked washers and dryers. A vending machine dispenses drinks, and an area is set aside for smokers outdoors. Two computers and a printer are set up in the lobby for guests to use. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
