Bottom Line

The upscale Westin Ottawa has a convenient location adjacent to the Rideau Canal and connected to the Shaw Centre and Rideau Centre shopping mall. Given its central location, the 24-story hotel buzzes with activity, from meetings and government events to leisure travelers. Highlights include a large fitness center, indoor pool/whirlpool, fine-dining steakhouse, concierge, and 44,000 square feet of event space. Its 495 rooms are slightly bland, equipped with mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and robes. Wi-Fi isn’t free for many guests, and some rooms have no views. Rates are competitive for its location and category, but the upscale Ottawa Marriott Hotel typically has better rates. It’s downtown but not as centrally located, however.

Scene

A busy high-rise chain hotel in the center of Ottawa’s downtown scene

This upscale high-rise Westin has an impressive lobby with wood columns and stainless steel-framed walls that soar up to four stories in some areas. Modern, starburst chandeliers hang above designer-quality leather sofas and chairs perched by windows that look out on the busy street outside the hotel's entrance. It buzzes with activity from hosted corporate events to government officials and families on holiday. The spacious and airy lobby handles the crowds well, preventing the hotel from feeling overwhelmed and hectic. But, elevator waits at the 24-story property can be lengthy sometimes, such as when conferences conclude. Expect to see many business people at the Shore Club’s striking, black granite bar counter that’s located just off the lobby.

Location

In the heart of downtown Ottawa, adjacent to Rideau Canal

Location is a big plus for the Westin, which is located in the heart of downtown Ottawa overlooking Rideau Canal, a popular place to walk or ice skate in winter. The hotel also is connected to the Shaw Centre (formerly the Ottawa Convention Centre) and Rideau Centre, a premier shopping mall with over 170 retailers and restaurants, like Gap and Steve Madden. The nightlife at ByWard Market is nine minutes on foot, as is Parliament Hill. The National Gallery of Canada is an 11-minute walk. It takes approximately 20 minutes by car to reach both Ottawa International Airport and the Canadian Tire Centre, home of pro hockey’s Ottawa Senators.

Rooms

Upscale, but slightly bland; with mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and bathrobes

The rooms are modern and upscale, but in an understated fashion that utilizes a pleasing mix of muted earth tones. Olive drapes look nice with light beige walls and upholstered chairs and two-tone, light brown carpet. The most striking feature is the matching amber wood found on headboards and dressers, that casts a warm glow when illuminated by natural light entering from the large windows. Ample space allows for armchairs or sleeper sofas in Suites and some Corner Rooms. Standard amenities include flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers, mini-fridges, and safes. Turndown service is an upscale touch. Overall, the bathrooms, like the bedroom areas, are comfortable and clean. Bathrooms can vary in size and features, with a mix of shower/tub combos or glass walk-in showers. Both bathroom options have rainfall showerheads. The Junior Suite we saw had a separate soaking tub and shower, as well as a double-sink vanity. Bathrooms include robes, white tea aloe toiletries, and hairdryers. Many rooms feature excellent views of the Rideau Canal or city skyline, but some rooms face walls.

Wi-Fi is free only to guests who are SPG members, but the program is free and easy to sign up for.Daly’s offers a full breakfast buffet each day and serves brunch on weekends.
