This quaint 13-room hotel located in downtown Palm Springs is the size of a motel, with the stylings of a hotel, and the service of a bed and breakfast. It's one of the best values in Palm Springs, offering guests personalized attention from the owners, a location just blocks from the main drag, and charming Mediterranean style throughout. It's also one of the most popular hotels in Palm Springs, and its small size can mean that it's hard to get a room. There are few property features (no fitness center or restaurant) but plenty of freebies extras, including a free espresso bar, free beer and wine in the evening, and free continental breakfast (with homemade scones daily).
Scene
An intimate property with plenty of Mediterranean charm
This tiny property has charming, homey Mediterranean style throughout. The low buildings, which surround the central pool, have red tile roofs and shaded overhangs with terra-cotta tile floors and greenery climbing up the stucco. The attractively landscaped grounds dotted with palm trees are private and serene. There's a small lush courtyard with a fountain and chic cushioned wicker seating. The hotel is completely gated for privacy and security. Couples make up the bulk of the clientele, not surprising given the mellow feel and romantic mountain views.
Location
Close to both nature and the action
La Maison is located just a 10-minute walk from the main drag of Palm Springs on East Palm Canyon Drive. The mountain views are beautiful from the property. Many good restaurants are available within a few minutes' walk. Bicycles are also available for guests who want to travel a bit farther. It is about a 15-minute drive from the airport.
Rooms
Homey and clean
The Mediterranean-style rooms are not big, but clean and certainly adequate for a couple. They have attractive terra-cotta tile floors instead of carpet, and antique-style dark wood furniture. Amenities include mini-fridges, hair dryers, and bathrobes. The property opened in 2012 after the owners completed renovations, so the beds are relatively new and quite comfortable. There are plenty of homey touches, such as bowls of taffy, paintings of bicycles with an old-time feel, ceiling fans, and old-fashioned lamps. All rooms have free Wi-Fi. The bathrooms are large relative to the size of the room, but quality varies; the one we saw in the Deluxe King Room was a bit plain and dated (the gold trim around the shower certainly dates to another decade), but the one we saw in the Deluxe King with Pool View had a contemporary shower and vanity.
Features
No restaurant or gym, but plenty of extras
What this hotel is lacking (a business center, restaurant, and gym most notably), it helps make up for in extras, such as the free espresso bar; free breakfast with homemade scones, cinnamon rolls, bagels, and juice; free afternoon wine and beer, and free bicycle rentals. The large heated pool and hot tub are at the center of the property, and surrounded by manicured, pretty gardens. Lounge chairs around the pool have washable terrycloth covers. An outdoor kitchen and barbecue is available for guests use, and the owners even provide spices! Though there is no spa, there are in-room spa services available, and guests also get a discount at Studio M three blocks away.
