Bottom Line

Los Arboles Hotel is a boutique upper-middle-range property located in the downtown area of Palm Springs, though its secluded garden atmosphere keeps it far removed from the traffic outside. It has the hallmarks of a modest couples' retreat with mission-style rooms, private hammocks, a lovely rooftop terrace with beautiful mountain views, and a quiet outdoor pool. It also caters to business travelers attending small events on-site or at the nearby Palm Springs Convention Center. Many spacious rooms and suites include private patios and some have upgrades like jetted tubs and fireplaces. The on-site Mexican restaurant, El Mirasol, is a local favorite. For something a bit chicer, the Movie Colony Hotel next door is more upscale and offers a free breakfast.

Los Arboles Hotel

Scene

Restored Spanish mission-style hotel and restaurant

Built in the late 1930s, the Los Arboles Hotel was renovated by its new private owners to be a discreet site for both small business conferences and romantic escapes. Its classic Spanish mission-style architecture with terra-cotta roof tiles fits right in for the area, and sunsets over the San Jacinto Mountains in the distance contribute to the romantic vibe. The grounds are scented with indigenous flowers, papayas, and mangoes that grow all around the property between sculptures by artist Felipe Castaneda and shady lounge chairs.

Residing on North Indian Canyon Drive, Los Arboles Hotel is centrally located near all that sunny Palm Springs has to offer. Lots of shopping, restaurants, and bars are just a block over on North Palm Canyon Drive. Rooms

Mission-style rooms with wooden furnishings and colorful Mexican tiles, plus private patios

Each of the 21 rooms and suites are decorated in Spanish mission decor with wood floors and dark wood and leather furnishings. Bright Mexican Talavera tiles add color to the neutral and earthy hues. All rooms have eco-friendly boutique toiletries, coffeemakers, and flat-screen TVs, but lack mini-fridges, though they are available for an additional charge. Most rooms have patios and some spacious options even have hammocks. Suites have separate living rooms and the Fireplace Room has a gas fireplace as well as a jetted tub in the bedroom. Bathrooms are accented with more colorful tile; some have large walk-in showers with integrated benches, others have roomy shower/tub combos. Though the focus here is on couples, families may find the sofa beds available in some of the suites convenient. Travelers should note that there have been some noise complaints due to thin walls.

Features

Outdoor pool, rooftop terrace with great views, popular Mexican restaurant and bar, plus meeting space

The hotel's grounds are beautifully maintained with sculptures, fruit trees, and cacti indigenous to the area. There are shady terraces with tables and lounge chairs, including a lovely covered rooftop terrace with couches and great mountain views. More loungers shaded by red and orange beach umbrellas surround the heated outdoor pool and hot tub. There's also a small meeting room off of the pool with banquet tables and a projection screen.

The hotel's popular restaurant and bar, El Mirasol, is a local favorite with an outdoor patio and healthy margarita menu. It serves Mexican cuisine inspired by the owners' native Zacatecas, a region with a rich culinary history reflected in the myriad sauces coming out of the kitchen -- chicken in a pipián sauce of roasted pumpkin seeds and dry chiles, or crispy fried pork lightened up by a tomatillo sauce with green chiles, scallions and cilantro.
