The Willows is an upscale bed-and-breakfast property in a Mediterranean-style villa built in 1925 that's full of romantic atmosphere. Once a private home that hosted the likes of Albert Einstein and Clark Gable, this eight-room inn feels discrete and serene despite being a five-minute walk from the heart of Palm Springs. Rooms are individually decorated in classic style with antique furnishings, and some have fireplaces and/or private patios. Features include an outdoor pool and hot tub, free three-course hot breakfast, and free evening wine and appetizers. While its location and historic charm are hard to match, rates tend to be higher than other upscale properties in Palm Springs. Travelers could also consider The Colony Palms Hotel, which offers Moroccan-inspired decor and more property features, like a spa and fitness center, but doesn't feel quite as sophisticated.

Bed-and-breakfast set in a charming and historic Mediterranean-style villa
The Willows is a historic inn originally built in 1925 as a winter retreat in the style of a Mediterranean villa. It's been host to a slew of celebrities from Shirley Temple to Albert Einstein (who was a frequent enough guest to have a room named in his honor). More recently, it has seen the likes of Diane Keaton, Cameron Diaz, Quentin Tarantino, and Robert DeNiro. Today, the building stands as one of the 10 oldest in the city, and extensive 1997 renovations restored the building to its original glory. The lush villa features a classic Mediterranean exterior with a terra-cotta roof and cream-colored stucco facade studded in outdoor terraces. Inside, the "lobby" feels more like a living room at a personal estate, high-end yet homey. Rich wood floors and doors pair perfectly with mahogany ceiling beams, while square brown rugs, a stone fireplace, velvety brown armchairs, and wood furniture offer a tasteful, classic vibe. Large glass and wood doors open up to a lovely terrace. The dining area is a real standout, with a natural-stone floor, huge fireplace, and elegant coffered ceiling -- best of all, an entire wall opens up to the outdoors, where a 50-foot waterfall trickles into a small pool. The property features pleasant outdoor sitting areas with wrought-iron chairs and pathways that lead past lavender, palm trees, and landscaped flower beds. The inn is opened from September through June, and is a charming spot ideal for romantic couples ready to relax.
Location
In a scenic spot just a five-minute walk from the heart of Palm Springs
The Willows is a cozy villa tucked into a mountain, so it overlooks both the town and the historic O'Donnell House across the street. Foliage and a large iron gate set the building and its grounds away from the street. Considering how quiet the area is, the property is surprisingly close to downtown, just a five-minute walk from South Palm Canyon and Indian Canyon Drives, with their coffee shops, restaurants, and stores. Guests also give high marks to Le Vallauris Restaurant, right across the street, a one-minute walk from the property. The border of Mount San Jacinto State Park is practically in the backyard, just a 13-minute walk in the opposite direction of town, via the Skyline Trail. Regional destinations are in driving distance, like Joshua Tree National Park (50 minutes) and Coachella (35 minutes). Palm Springs International Airport is a five- to 10-minute drive, and it's about a two-hour drive to Los Angeles. Parking is free.
Rooms
Individually decorated rooms with high-end, classic decor and modern amenities
Like the lobby, guest rooms offer the upscale yet homey ambiance of a private estate rather than a hotel. Each room is individually furnished and decorated in a classic style, with hardwood or stone-tiled floors, and elegant upholstered and wood furniture, including hand-carved and antique pieces. Among the most striking is The Library Room, which features a lovely antique writing desk, a hand-carved dark cherry wood fireplace, and a coffered ceiling crafted from rich wood. All rooms are air-conditioned with individual climate control. In-room tech includes free Wi-Fi, flat-screen cable TVs with DVD players, and iPod docking stations. There are also mini-fridges and coffeemakers, plus free bottled water. Bathroom decor varies and each may include a shower/tub combo, separate tile shower and bathtub, or even a roll-top or clawfoot tub. Bathrooms are outfitted with hairdryers, plush robes and towels, and free individual toiletries. Free turndown service comes nightly. Guests occasionally note noise from nearby rooms, so light sleepers might want to consider earplugs.
Features
Outdoor heated pool and hot tub, free three-course breakfast, free wine and appetizers, and private events
Amenities at The Willows reflect its intimate, upscale-guesthouse environment. The hotel's star features are a heated outdoor swimming pool and hot tub, which are open for use 24 hours. Cushioned lounge chairs surround the pool and guests are given towels and offered free iced tea during the day. There are other spots for relaxation, too, including outdoor terraces and walking paths as well as the hotel's lobby.
The elegant indoor/outdoor dining area faces a 50-foot waterfall, and a free three-course breakfast, with hot and cold items, is served here every morning. In the evening, the hotel hosts a free wine and hors d’oeuvres reception for guests. While the hotel doesn't serve lunch or dinner, guests can order these meals as room service from Le Vallauris, a French restaurant across the street. The hotel also offers treats throughout the day, such as free fresh fruit or nuts.
Weddings and corporate events can be hosted at The Willows (for up to 75 guests) and at the neighboring O'Donnell House (for up to 125 guests). Past guests have praised staff for being accommodating and attentive. The front desk is open 24 hours and the inn offers concierge service, and laundry/dry cleaning service. Parking and Wi-Fi are free. Unlike many other hotels in the area, this one does not charge a resort fee.
