Bottom Line

The Hotel Chopin is situated near the famous Grévin Museum in the Passage Jouffroy, which is one of the more atypical historical treasures that Paris has to offer. The Passage Jouffroy is a glass-covered arcade lined with bookshops and art galleries. After experiencing this posh environment, it's a bit of a disappointment to enter this old-fashioned budget hotel, which could do with some renovation. The nearby Hotel Palm Opera offers considerably more style for similar or only slightly higher rates.

Hotel Chopin

Scene

A small historic budget hotel right in the middle of Paris' covered passages

The hotel Chopin is situated at the heart of one of Paris's most beautiful covered passageways. Beyond a glass door with gold lettering, the reception area is simply decorated and has an old Chesterfield sofa and an upright piano (topped by a bust of Frederic Chopin). The hotel opened in 1846 and is named for the famous composer, who died in Paris in 1849; it aims to honor its historical status by using traditional decor evocative of the era in which Chopin lived. The lobby has some charm, but the rooms sadly feel more like they're from the 1980s than the 19th century.

Location

In the 9th arrondissement, in a historic glass-covered shopping arcade

Parisian covered passageways or arcades, the ancestors of shopping malls, were created so that Parisians could walk and shop without worrying about rain or cold. They have changed relatively little over the years and reveal a charming and lesser-known side of Paris. It's in the heart of this exceptional environment, just near the Grévin Museum and in between an art bookshop and a dollhouse specialist, that visitors will find the Hotel Chopin. The hotel is near several tourist sights, including the Opera and the world-famous shopping at the Galeries Lafayette and Printemps department stores. Montmartre is a pleasant 20-minute walk away through little cobbled streets that are steeped in Parisian history -- and steep in the hilly sense!

Rooms

Most are tiny and old-fashioned, though they're adequate for a two-pearl property

The Hotel Chopin has a unique setting, but most of the no-frills rooms are old-fashioned and short on charm. The bathrooms are very basic, and stocked with no more than a bar of soap and towels. Some renovated rooms do have quaint touches such as patterned wallpaper or toile curtains, but guests can often find better in terms of quality and comfort for the price. Further room renovations could turn this dated budget hotel into a hidden gem.

Features

Continental breakfast with freshly squeezed orange juice

In spite of its exceptional location, this hotel doesn't provide all you might expect for the price. Rooms have only the most basic amenities, and breakfasts are not included. Though the continental breakfast is simple, it does include freshly squeezed orange juice. Wi-Fi is free, but signal strength varies depending on the room.
