Bottom Line

On the outskirts of touristy Paris in the 14th Arrondissement, the three-pearl Hotel du Parc offers attractive, modern accommodations at affordable rates. It's situated on a quiet street in the local neighborhood of Montparnasse, and it's close to excellent public transportation. The property's 36 units are clean and polished, with flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi, but no minibars or coffee and tea provisions. Most bathrooms, however, are drab and in need of updating. The hotel has a breakfast room with lively decor and pretty views of the park across the street, although "petit dejeuner" isn't included. As an alternative, the nearby Hotel des Bains is a budget property with a slightly lower rate that has charming traditional furnishings and units with sleeker bathrooms.

Hotel du Parc

Scene

Traditional Parisian exteriors and loudly colored interiors

The custard-yellow facade of the Hotel Du Parc, laced with wrought-iron Juliet balconies and flower boxes, is the very picture of a Parisian postcard. Inside, energetic magenta and cherry-red walls provide a backdrop for dining hall-style tables and chairs. This reception space is busiest in the morning when guests grab breakfast in the sunlit breakfast room and try to nab the best seats next to the French windows, which offer lovely views of the park across the street. But apart from this space, there isn't much in the way of common areas. The reception desk takes up most of the lobby, but there's a small public computer station tucked in a corner that serves as a speedy place to check email. A few shelves of books directly across there give a tiny lending library. The clientele here tend to be those on a budget who don't mind being on the outskirts of touristy Paris in exchange for accommodations that are tidy, efficient, and affordable.

Location

In a non-touristy, quiet neighborhood close to public transit but far from most top sights

Hotel du Parc sits on a quiet street that's closed to traffic, across from a park and playground. The neighborhood isn't touristy, and it's filled with locals' bistros, cafes, and "tabacs." For picking up drinks and snacks to bring back to the room, the Monoprix Montparnasse supermarket is a three-minute walk from the hotel. However, it's also slightly off the beaten path from Paris' top sights. That said, it's only a two-minute walk to the closest metro station and six minutes on foot to Gare Montparnasse train station for access to four metro lines, regional trains, and the Eurostar. Driving to Charles de Gaulle Airport takes about 60 minutes, and it's a little more than 20 minutes to Orly Airport by car.

  • Two-minute walk to Edgar Quintet metro Station
  • Six-minute walk to Gare Montparnasse train station
  • 20 minutes to Musée d'Orsay via metro
  • 20 minutes to Notre-Dame via metro
  • 21 minutes to Arc de Triomphe via metro
  • 22 minutes to Champs-Élysées via metro
  • 22 minutes to Luxembourg Gardens via metro

Rooms

Comfortable, appealing rooms with flat-screen TVs, but bathrooms need a refresh

Hotel du Parc's rooms are modern, bright, and streamlined. For an affordable, small-scale hotel, decor is rather fashionable; standout details include satiny, tufted headboards in muted shades such as plum and sage in some rooms, and walls accented with gigantic photographs of roses in others. Sleek, silver pendants flank beds, and the dark-wood furnishings throughout create a unified look. All units are outfitted with flat-screen TVs, safes, air-conditioning, and free Wi-Fi. Kettles are available upon request at reception, but there's no minibars or coffee/tea facilities.

Bathrooms are a significant step down from bedrooms. The majority could use a refresh, with chipped enamel on tubs, discolored tile, and old fixtures. A few, however, have updated stall showers with removable showerheads and newer vanities. All have heated towel racks, and some even contain separate bathtubs and showers, a rarity at this pearl level (although these are hardly luxurious).

Guests note rooms are quiet -- roughly three-quarters face the inner courtyard -- and they have plenty of storage space in wardrobes. Units start at about 130 square feet; Doubles and Triples are slightly larger, at 160 square feet.

Features

Breakfast with hot options and free Wi-Fi -- but common spaces are lacking

As expected, features at Hotel du Parc are rather limited. The hotel does offer a continental breakfast buffet -- not included in the room rate -- that's served in a breakfast room located on the same level as the reception desk. The spread includes cereals, yogurt, breads, and a coffee/tea station. The lobby also has a workstation with a Mac desktop computer that's free to use, although printing has a per-page fee attached. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.

Reception and the lobby are up two flights of stairs, which means hauling luggage up on your own; guests with mobility issues should note that the elevator is on the lobby level. There's also no on-site parking.
