Bottom Line

The 32-room value Hotel Montmartre provides basic accommodation at budget prices. Its 18th Arrondissement location is central to the Montmartre district, near Gare du Nord station and iconic Sacre Coeur Basilica. Small low-frills rooms and studios with kitchenettes have flat-screen TVs, but they lack air-conditioning and only studios have kettles and coffeemakers. The hotel doesn't offer breakfast, but plenty of cafes and restaurants are nearby. An elevator here is a bonus for Paris. The hotel is by a school, so early-morning noise can be an issue, but for an affordable stay in an expensive city, it's a good pick and close to the metro. Housekeeping is provided daily and Wi-Fi is free. For a budget property with a livelier vibe and free breakfast, consider St Christopher's Inn.

Scene

Low-frills hotel with no common areas outside Paris' center

On one of Montmartre's small streets surrounding the magnificent Sacre Coeur Basilica, this property offers a cheap option for travelers that don't mind being outside the city center. Don't expect any lounge areas, as the only common space is a small lobby with a desk and a few forest-green chairs are near an espresso machine. Guests are provided with entry codes for evenings and nights when reception closes. The area can feel a bit seedy to some at night, but surrounding streets are lively and the humbling Sacre Coeur is close.

Location

Outside Paris' center, near Sacre Coeur and the metro

Some of Montmartre's streets can feel sketchy at night, but the area's history includes former homes of Van Gogh and Picasso. Sacre Coeur Basilica is a five-minute walk and Montmartre Museum is twice that. Charming cafes line Rue des Trois Freres, a five-minute walk away, and shopping on Rue de Steinkerque is the same distance. Chateau Rouge metro station is a six-minute walk, and while the hotel isn't within walking distance of major sights, Notre Dame Cathedral, The Louvre, and Arc de Triomphe are a 30-minute subway ride, while the Eiffel Tower is slightly longer at 45 minutes. A supermarket is a one-minute walk and busses are a few minutes farther. Moulin Rouge cabaret is a 15-minute walk and it's the same distance for transport hub Gare du Nord. Charles de Gaulle Airport is a 30-minute drive or 50 minutes by metro, and Orly Airport is an hour away by both car or metro.

Rooms

Basic but comfortable room with flat-screen TVs

Rooms in Paris are small and ones here are no exception, but they're clean, light, and divided into rooms and studios with kitchenettes. No-frills furnishings are bland and have little embellishment, with simple white linens, minimal wood furniture, and beige tile and walls, though some have patterned drapes and artwork. Amenities include phones, small wall-mounted flat-screen TVs, and desks, but there are no air-conditioning, safes, or mirrors. Additionally, only studios have kettles. Studios vary in size but remain compact, and kitchenettes in these include sinks, electric hobs, microwaves, kettles, coffeemakers, and mini-fridges, plus basic dishes, cookware, cutlery, and dish soap. Sit-up stools are next to small dining tables, and triple rooms offer more space with sofa beds. The small, white-tiled bathrooms have cubicle showers, hairdryers, and toiletries limited to soap wall dispensers. Views are of the street or nearby school, and guests should note children can be heard in the mornings.

Features

Lobby coffee and free Wi-Fi

Features are limited at Hotel Montmartre, where guests are primarily paying for a place to lay their head. Espresso can be self-served in the lobby's tiny seating area, but no other food or drinks are available on-site. Additionally, there are no fitness, wellness, or business facilities of any kind. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
