La Manufacture is a mid-range, 57-room
hotel housed in a beautiful Haussmannian building on Paris' Left Bank. The
impressively colorful and arty styling of the lobby doesn't quite extend to the
rooms, but they still provide a pleasant, understated decor, while top-level
rooms provide special views. Amenities consist of breakfast for a fee, free
Wi-Fi, an on-site bar, and a lobby computer terminal. Although the location of the property isn't
super central, nearby transport links and plenty of local color means that the
hotel's generally low rates can be a real bargain.****
Scene
Elegant 19th-century building with colorful arty interiors
La Manufacture is housed in a particularly
elegant 19th-century building in the Haussmannian architectural
style with a white limestone facade, ornate carved stonework, and
intricate wrought-iron window railings. Drawing inspiration and its name from
the famous Gobelins textile factory nearby, the lobby is a charming, vibrant
space awash with colorful Philippe Hurel designer furnishings and vibrant,
eye-catching artwork by Italian artist Alberto Conti. A polished wooden floor
leads to two elevators and a wonderful spiral staircase that winds up the seven
floors of the hotel. The vibe here is warm and welcoming, and the arty,
laid-back atmosphere attracts mostly international tourists who want something
different that’s not overly pricey.****
Location
Set in the 13th arrondissement, near the Place d'Italie transport hub
Situated near the Latin Quarter, La
Manufacture is located on Paris' Left Bank in the 13th arrondissement to the
south. Positioned on a small street just next to the
Avenue des Gobelins, the Place d'Italie transport hub is just three minutes'
walk south, making it very convenient for guests to get around the city. There
are various attractions within walking distance as well, including Paris' most “authentic”
street, the Rue Mouffetard, full of restaurants, shops, and cafes. The district is also home to Paris' principal Asian community, with
the Asian Quarter 15 minutes south by foot. Orly Airport is only 15 to 20 minutes
south by car (25 minutes by public transportation) while Charles de Gaulle
Airport is a 40 minutes’ drive northeast (45 minutes by public transportation).****
Rooms
Simple, cozy rooms have balconies offering iconic Parisian views
La
Manufacture has 57 rooms spread over seven floors, all of which are decorated
in a simple and cozy yet decidedly average style that doesn't quite deliver on
the promise of the public areas. Still, units are clean and modern, and
some have balconies, a couple of which offer distant views of the Eiffel Tower and
Panthéon. Amenities include free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and air-conditioning,
while bathrooms provide wall-mounted hairdryers and all-natural toiletries.
Some fixtures are starting to show signs of wear and, as is typical for Paris,
rooms can be a little cramped.****
Features
Free Wi-Fi throughout and Internet terminal in lobby
La
Manufacture serves a buffet and cooked-to-order breakfast each morning in the
playful dining area, though the meals are generally not included in the rate. The bar
is decorated in the same upbeat arty style as the lobby and serves drinks until
late; guests can also order drinks from their rooms. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout
the hotel and there’s a computer terminal in the lobby.****
