Bottom Line

The Melia Paris Champs Elysees is an upscale chain hotel whose 2014 renovation has successfully retained the property's subtle period charm. Its setting on an attractive, tree-lined avenue is quintessentially Parisian, and the Arc de Triomphe and Trocadéro are both within walking distance. Rooms are handsomely finished and mostly spacious for Paris, however some are on the smaller side and bathrooms can be tiny. Rates are impressively low for the location and caliber of hotel, however facilities are a little sparse and breakfast is not included. Try to avoid the smaller-sized rooms to get the most value for money.

Melia Paris Champs Elysees

Scene

Typically elegant 19th-century facade with tastefully renovated period interiors

The Melia Paris Champs Elysees (formerly Melia Alexander Boutique Hotel) is housed in a elegant 19th-century Haussmannian building with a limestone facade and ornate wrought-iron detailing typical of its well-heeled Parisian neighborhood. An extensive 2014 renovation has left much of the lobby's original turn-of-the-century charm intact, with pleasantly aged carved wood paneling, classic black-and-white tile floors, and antique-style furnishings -- the only nod to modernity is a collection of contemporary drum lampshades illuminating the scene. The small vintage elevator maintains its original wrought-iron cage, and carries guests to the six floors of narrow, carpeted hallways.

Location

Set on a tree-lined avenue in the 16th arrondissement, a 15-minute walk from the Arc de Triomphe and Trocadéro

The hotel entrance is sandwiched between two shops on the attractive and upmarket Victor Hugo Avenue, a busy, tree-lined road lined with shops and restaurants in northwest Paris's well-heeled 16th arrondissement. The Arc de Triomphe and the Champs-Elysées are 15 minutes away on foot; the Charles de Gaulle – Étoile Metro and RER train hub which offers connections to the rest of the city and surrounding area is there also. The closest metro stop, Victor Hugo, is less than five minutes away, and puts the central tourist sights within easy access. The famous Trocadéro, with its unobstructed views of the Eiffel Tower across the Seine, is a 15-minute walk in the other direction.

Rooms

Handsome blend of historic and contemporary, many with private balconies; some notably smaller than others

All 61 rooms have benefited from the hotel's 2014 refresh and are decorated in a smart and stately style of subtle shades of gray, with a mix of antique-style and contemporary furnishings. All the amenities you'd expect from an upscale chain are provided including free Wi-Fi, tea and coffee facilities, minibars, and flat-screen TVs with satellite channels. Marble bathrooms have heated towel rails, signature toiletries, combination shower-tubs, and wall-mounted hairdryers, but some are unacceptably small. Also, while some rooms are spacious with plenty of natural light from lovely long French windows, others feel cramped. Many open onto small private balconies.

Features

Private garden, breakfast for a fee, small business center, and meeting room

Although there is no restaurant in the hotel, there is a small breakfast room where a hot and cold buffet breakfast is served; it's not included in the rate, however, and is fairly expensive. The connecting bar serves drinks throughout the day (though closes relatively early) and room service is available for lunch and dinner. A small, graveled garden in the courtyard also provides a secluded and peaceful spot to lounge in warmer months. The Victor Hugo Library is available for meetings, there's a computer for guest use, and Wi-Fi is free.
