Bottom Line

Opened in 2000, this 59-room upper-mid-range hotel is in the Latin Quarter of central Paris. It’s a beautiful area, and is an ideal base for seeing the city's sights. There's no restaurant at the hotel but there are countless restaurants and bars on the doorstep. The hotel’s decor is British-themed, so think tartan prints and leather chesterfield sofas. Rooms are clean, with a traditional style and colorful accents, but are showing wear and tear in places. If you prefer something a bit more hip, it's worth checking out the nearby Hotel Le Notre Dame, which offers Christian Lacroix-designed rooms for a similar price.

Oyster Hotel Review

Villa Pantheon

Scene

Warm, cozy, British-themed decor

In a pretty, ornate and typically Parisian building, the hotel has green and gold awnings outside and is next door to a classic French brasserie. There are decorative wrought iron balconies in front of the windows, many with attractive floral window boxes. The decor of the hotel is British-themed. The lobby has wooden parquet flooring, wood paneled walls and deep red button-backed armchairs and chesterfield sofas in the lounge area. Hallways have a strong Scottish feel with navy and green tartan carpet and dark green doors through to the guest rooms. The breakfast room is in the basement. It's quite dark and could use some updating. There's a dark blue and green patterned carpet, blue walls, wooden chairs with red seat pads and red lampshades. The bar has the look of an old-fashioned gentleman’s club -- there’s more wood flooring with deep red rugs and winged leather armchairs.

Location

In the Latin Quarter, within walking distance of major sights

Villa Pantheon is a great base for exploring the city. The heart of the Latin Quarter is just a five-minute walk away, where the picturesque streets are filled with charming bistros, bars, and boutique shops. Also a five-minute walk are the famous sights of Notre Dame, the Pantheon, and the beautiful Jardin du Luxembourg. There are plenty of Metro stations within a few minutes' walk -- Cardinal Lemoine, Maubert - Mutualite, and Cluny - La Sorbonne are the closest. These will get you all over the city quickly and cheaply to see the sights that are too far to walk to. It’s easy to get to Charles de Gaulle airport from here too, as the St Michel train station is 10 minutes on foot and the train goes directly there.

Rooms

Smartly decorated, but a little worn

The Standard room is fairly small. It has wooden flooring, green striped wallpaper, and red plaid lampshades and curtains. There's a dark wooden headboard with square hatches, and matching full-length mirror, desk, and closet door. The furniture is showing signs of wear and tear. There's not much closet space, and the cream-tiled bathroom is on the small side too and could also use a refresh as there are signs of peeling paint and mold in places. The shower is very powerful though, and there’s no shortage of hot water. Deluxe rooms are a lot more spacious with a warmer red and gray color scheme and furnishings. Every room has air-conditioning, a minibar, bathrobes, a safe, flat-screen TV with satellite channels, a desk, hairdryer, free Wi-Fi, free weekday newspapers, and room service during limited hours. Some rooms face the back of neighboring buildings.

Features

Equipment rental available for business travelers

The hotel serves a continental buffet breakfast daily. It’s a standard spread of rolls, croissants, yogurt, fruit, juice, tea, and coffee, but by venturing out of the hotel, better value can be found at any of the nearby cafes. There’s no fitness center here but guests of the hotel can use one at a nearby property free of charge. Additional services such as car parking, transport to the airport, and babysitting can all be arranged for an additional fee. Staff at the on-site business center are happy to help business guests with their requirements -- cell phones, laptops and fax machines can all be rented, and there’s free Wi-Fi and a small conference room. The lounge area is spacious and comfortable and has international newspapers and magazines and views over a small courtyard.
