Bottom Line

The 56-room Paros Agnati Hotel is a charming, upscale property on the northern part of Paros island, set a seven-minute walk from a beach with fine sands. Stunning views of the Aegean Sea are available from outdoor terraces and some rooms. The remote location adds charm, and free 10-minute shuttles run downtown (infrequently), while water taxis offer a more scenic route. Stylish and serene rooms add modern touches to traditional Cycladic architecture and come with minibars, flat-screen TVs, and private outdoor spaces with beautiful cascading bougainvillea. An outdoor pool and bar get the sun and al fresco dining at the restaurant is popular. A buffet breakfast is included, but it gets mixed reviews. Hotel Eri is more basic, but closer to town.

Paros Agnanti Resort

Scene

Charming hilltop hotel with calm surroundings

Agnati literally translates to "a place from which to gaze". Views are breathtaking from this traditional whitewashed property, thanks to its high-perched setting that makes panoramic vistas of serene waters, the distant port, and sun-drenched countryside possible. The classic blue-on-white design scheme is pretty and the hotel's buildings are divided by natural rocks and lush bougainvillea. Cool interiors have simple wood touches, while outdoor stone terraces are classier with wicker seating under canopies. Rugged cliffs, shrubbery, and drape-enclosed daybeds give the pool a secluded feel, although loud music here can dampen the romance. Kids can splash about in their own pool, though guests are primarily couples -- a small chapel in the hotel grounds even draws some wedding guests.

Location

A little out of the way, but tranquil and near a gorgeous beach

The hotel is peacefully removed from downtown noise and traffic. While there isn't much nearby, Marcello Beach's white sands are a seven-minute walk from the property and it has a beach club. Many guests hire cars, scooters, or quad bikes, although free shuttles run downtown infrequently (at 10 a.m., 5 p.m., and 10 p.m. during our stay). Water taxis are a quicker and more scenic alternative and take five minutes to reach the capital, where narrow streets divide shops, bars, and quaint tavernas. On Paros' highest point, the 1200s-built Frankish Castle is a 12-minute drive and it's around the same time for Paros' Archaeological Museum. Paros Ferry Terminal is a half-hour drive and ferries from here take five minutes for the adjacent Antiparos island. Paros Airport is 22 minutes away by car.

Rooms

Bright, pleasant rooms with furnished terraces and flat-screen TVs; some with private pools

Rooms have traditional charm, though they're outfitted with stylish, modern decor. Pastel blues in some are reminiscent of the nearby waters, while others get plum or pistachio accents from throw pillows. Cycladic whites dominate and floors are done in either gray marble or white stone. They come in many categories, from 215-square-foot (20-square-meter) standard doubles, to larger family rooms, plus a variety of suites. All have furnished terraces, where exposed stone and abundant flowers are idyllic, and some offer stunning sea views. Bathrooms in marbles or gray slate have either showers or shower/tub combos. Amenities include flat-screen satellite TVs, kettles for tea- and coffee-making, minibars, slippers, air-conditioning, and safes, while upgraded rooms get welcome baskets and robes. Suites have living areas and some really up the ante with private infinity pools, hot tubs, smart TVs, and high-end Chopard toiletries. The hotel collaborates with local farmers, and regional marmalades and oils add decorative elements in rooms, and are also for sale. Note that some rooms can only be reached via stairs.

Features

Outdoor pools and sports facilities, a restaurant serving free breakfast, plus a chapel

A notable downside is the hotel's lack of spa and fitness facilities, but those simply looking for a poolside getaway will likely be content. Sunbeds and parasols surround the outdoor pool which is decent-sized and has an adjacent kiddy pool. Cocktails are popular at the poolside bar during happy hour. Two tennis courts and a basketball court are on-site, as are table tennis and a play area for toddlers. The restaurant serves Greek "moussaka" and great seafood. While indoor dining areas are somewhat lackluster, potted plants on the outdoor terraces are lovely. The free buffet breakfast gets mixed reviews, and offers scrambled eggs and bacon (which can get cold), continental options, and feta cheeses. A meeting room has a 250-person capacity and the hotel can host weddings at the on-site chapel. Bike rentals are handy, though the bikes themselves are rickety. Airport transfers and babysitting are at a fee, while room service, WI-Fi, and on-site parking are free.
