Oyster Hotel Review

Castello di Monterone

Scene

Very popular with tourists and locals alike, particularly for romantic getaways

A stream of international tourists comes frequently to this refurbished property, as do locals seeking an idyllic retreat. The exterior structure of this 13th-century castle has been preserved, as have a considerable number of the original intramural features, including inlaid stone relief, interior wooden staircases, and bits of ceiling frescoes. A small spa, which includes a limited number of services as well as a sauna and steam room, complements the romantic picture, helping to make this a popular wedding destination as well. The roof, accessible to guests, provides 360-degree views of the surrounding landscape.

Location

A 15-minute drive from the Perugia airport and a five-minute drive from the town limits

The property is located on a hill just outside the town limits of the Umbrian town of Perugia. The castle is accessible by cab from both the town center and the airport. Car parks at the hotel as well as on the outskirts of Perugia make for easy access to the city without having to struggle for parking. The architecturally rich town of Assisi, visible from the castle grounds, is a 25-minute drive from the hotel.

Rooms

Impressively preserved medieval architecture updated with modern comforts

Bedrooms and bathrooms alike feature stone walls, gorgeously restored dark wood doors, carved furnishings, and occasionally dramatic lighting. Rooms have not been enlarged from the castle’s original architecture; in some cases there is a very small amount of space between the end of the bed and the wall, and, in keeping with the castle’s original function as a military structure, windows on some side can be tiny (meaning a dark bedroom in certain cases). Bathrooms are fully modern and tiled with stone. Guests have remarked one can hear noise from adjoining rooms on occasion. Some rooms and bathrooms have breathtaking views of the hills.

Features

Small pool, sauna and steam room are available to guests at no extra charge

Well-maintained gardens on the grounds, which are excellent for a stroll, are adjacent to a small but lovely pool more suitable for dipping than laps, as well as a sauna and a steam room. The restaurant, Il Postale, has seating on the terrace overlooking the Umbrian countryside. It is mostly lauded by guests but has received a few mixed reviews. The free buffet breakfast gets high marks.
