Best Beach Hotels in Phu Quoc Island

Your Phu Quoc checklist could include visiting a Taoist temple, seeing the thousands of local artifacts at Coi Nguon Museum, and getting lost in the market of Duong Dong. But the Vietnamese island’s biggest draw is its spectacular coastline (especially on the western part of the island, where the sunsets are particularly striking), so your travel itinerary must involve lots and lots of beach time. Take a look at our favorite beach resorts on Phu Quoc Island.

Mango Bay Resort

Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam

Mango Bay Resort has a secluded beachfront location at the end of a small country road in western Phu Quoc. The tranquil hotel offers direct access to three small, sandy bays that get little to no foot traffic due to their remoteness, save a handful of guests from other neighboring resorts. Although there is no shortage of free things to do on-site, most guests during our visit seemed more than happy to just sit on a lounger or a hammock by the sea, or sip on drinks and snack on tapas at one of the two beach bars -- both with panoramic sunset views. There is no waiter service here, like there is at Salinda and Chen Sea (below), but Mango Bay's three quiet beaches make it the top beach resort on the island. The spa is made up of four treatment rooms housed in charming thatched huts set in the gardens and by the beach. The treatments menu is limited compared to our next two picks, but Mango Bay's massages get great reviews from past guests. Mango Bay also stands out for its comprehensive eco-friendly program, covering everything from the use of solar energy for heating water, to the minimal use of fuel-powered vehicles, and the protection of the reef located right off the property’s beach.

Salinda Resort Phu Quoc Island

Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam

The stunning Salinda Resort has an ideal beachfront location on the western coast of Phu Quoc. The hotel's lovely palm-fringed beach has fine sand, calm waters (in the winter only), and rows of loungers and umbrellas. Waiters come around with free non-alcoholic drinks and snacks several times per day here and by the infinity pool. (Few Phu Quoc beach hotels feature waiter service.) There is also a pool/beachside snack bar selling cocktails, fresh fruit juices, and small bites between meals. Sea kayaks are available for a fee. All 121 of Salinda's large and luxurious rooms are equipped with an array of upscale amenities ranging from large flat-screen TVs and fully stocked minibars to iPod docks, electric kettles, and beach bags. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel -- including the beach and the pool deck -- and free water, tea, and coffee are replenished daily free of charge.

Chen Sea Resort & Spa Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam

Located in a secluded part of western Phu Quoc, Chen Sea Resort & Spa has just 36 villas are arranged in four rows along a beautiful beach with fine sand and clear waters. A number of wooden loungers with white cushions, small tables, and white umbrellas are well spread out along the sand, while there is additional seating on a pleasant lawn adjacent to the beach. Sea kayaks, surfboards, and snorkeling equipment can be borrowed for a few hours free of charge. Food and drink services are available at the beach as well -- rare among Phu Quoc beach hotels. Due to the hotel’s location on the western coast of Phu Quoc, sunsets are particularly stunning here.

4

Sea Sense Resort

Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam

Sea Sense is a serene resort with a beautiful, intimate beach and 28 bungalow-style rooms, many offering views of the beach. The pool/beach bar offers a selection of light bites for lunch -- such as sandwiches and a few traditional Vietnamese dishes -- along with cocktails, beer, wine, and snacks. Sea Sense isn't a luxury option like Salinda and Chen Sea, but it does offer waiter service on the beach like those two. The beach is especially popular in the late afternoon due to its stunning panoramic sunset views. At night, guests gather for dinner at Sunset Restaurant, housed in a striking pavilion with a large deck built on stilts over the sea, and decorated with candles. Note that swimming in the beach is not allowed in the summer due to strong undertow.

5

Eden Resort

Duong To, Phu Quoc Island

The 166-room Eden Resort is built directly on a lovely stretch of sand, part of beautiful Long Beach. Although there aren’t technically any private beaches in Phu Quoc, the hotel does have a few dozen cushioned loungers and straw umbrellas only for guests. We saw no non-guests around save for a couple or two strolling down the beach, as there is nothing but other beachfront resorts in the immediate vicinity. There is a small thatched hut offering a good selection of cocktails and snacks on the sand, but no waiter service here. The hotel’s main restaurant serves generous portions of average international cuisine with ocean views, and massages are available both at the beach and in charming huts built on stilts over a pond. Overall, Eden is a beautiful property with lovely gardens and excellent sunset views, but it needs some investment.

6

Famiana Resort & Spa

Cua Lap, Duong To, Phu Quoc Island

Famiana lacks the wow factor of Salinda, Chen Sea, and Mango Bay, but it more than fits the bill for a simple, relaxing vacation by the sea. Phu Quoc’s main road divides the property in two sections, each with a distinct vibe and character. The Beach section, as its name suggests, is adjacent to the sea and is home to the main lobby, main restaurant, the spa, and the beachfront pool. Although not as wide as some of the neighboring beaches, the stretch of sand right outside the hotel is cute and pleasant, with fine sand, shallow waters, and plenty of cushioned loungers under thatched umbrellas. A small, charming beach bar housed in a thatched hut offers juices, sodas, and cocktails -- but at higher prices than the average in Phu Quoc. The bar is particularly popular in the afternoon, when guests gather at the beach to watch the sunset. Sea kayaks can be rented for a fee.

7

Sea Star Resort Phu Quoc

Duong Dong, Phu Quoc Island

Sea Star Resort is set on a lovely stretch of Long Beach, a 15-minute walk from central Duong Dong. The beach offers great sunset views, though there are not enough loungers at the beach for all guests. The beachfront restaurant serves average Vietnamese/international fare and barbecue dinners, while a thatched beach bar whips up cocktails and frozen drinks. For a little more money, Eden Resort and Famiana Resort & Spa are more upscale, with big rooms, nice pools, and private loungers on the beach.

8

Thanh Kieu Beach Resort

Duong Dong, Phu Quoc Island

Thanh Kieu Beach Resort is a charming beachfront property with lovely grounds and a quiet atmosphere, a five-minute drive from the city center. There isn’t much on-site besides a beachfront seafood/Vietnamese restaurant, a beach bar with panoramic sunset views and a good drink menu, and a couple dozen loungers on the sand, but when we visited guests were content to spend their days on the beach sunbathing, swimming, and unwinding with a drink at the bar. Rates are generally fair, especially in the winter and spring, but those on a tighter budget may want to consider Lien Hiep Thanh Resort, which has basic rooms, a cute restaurant with sunset views, and a nice beach. With a pool, a game room, and a sandy beach, Eden Resort is a better pick for families, but rates are generally higher than at Thanh Kieu Beach Resort.
