Bottom Line

The 47-acre, upscale Splash Beach Resort by Langham Hospitality Group is an expansive beachfront resort with a fun outdoor water park, infinity-edge swimming pool, and several accommodation options. Its location a 15-minute drive from Phuket International Airport is convenient, but it also brings airplane noise and a far drive to get to other areas of interest. The 615 rooms range from standard hotel units without balconies to family-friendly rooms with bunk beds to four-bedroom villas with kitchens and private pools. Crowding at the breakfast buffet, mediocre food and limited dining options, and long walks (buggy transportation is available) are notable downsides. However freebies such as water park access, daily activities, Wi-Fi, and parking are pluses. It's worth comparing rates with the similarly family-friendly JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa.

Splash Beach Resort by Langham Hospitality Group

Scene

Contemporary, family-friendly beachfront resort with fun water park and activities

Splash Beach Resort by Langham Hospitality Group occupies a large plot of land along pretty Mai Khao Beach, with winding pathways that can be taken on foot or on the free buggies that go around the property. The grounds resemble a tropical golf course with green lawns, artificial ponds, and tall palm trees. Acting as the centerpiece is the free-to-access Splash Jungle Water Park, which has colorful slides and various water features for kids -- and adults. Most boisterous activity takes place here, though families and couples can also be found at the ocean-view infinity pool. In addition to playing children, planes flying overhead and piped music at the pool -- and a DJ at times -- create a lively atmosphere that's best-suited to families or couples seeking an upbeat getaway.

Renovations in 2018 brought a fresh look to common areas and rooms, but some construction is still ongoing. Also on the downside, some past guests have found the buffet eatery has mediocre food, long lines at breakfast, and an unpleasant odor in some areas. Nevertheless, many families find Splash Beach Resort to be a good value, particularly with the water park access and free daily activities.

Location

Along Mai Khao Beach, a 15-minute drive to Phuket International Airport

For those who don't want to spend much time driving to or from the airport, the Splash Beach Resort by Langham Hospitality Group has an excellent location, just a 10- to 15-minute drive from Phuket International Airport. The hotel is also located directly on pretty Mai Khao Beach, though the currents are stronger here than farther south, so the waters are often too dangerous for swimming. Additionally, there's little of interest in the immediate surrounds, aside from a few shops and food stands. A 7-11 can be reached in just 10 minutes on foot, plus there's a mini-market on-site for groceries and sundries. The party area of Patong is about 50 minute away by car. Expect a 20-minute drive to the Yacht Haven Marina or Blue Canyon Country Club. Parking and buggies around the resort are provided for free.

Rooms

Fresh, contemporary rooms with comfy beds, robes, and minibars, plus balconies in most

There are 615 rooms, suites, penthouses, and villas at this massive property. Thanks to renovations in 2018, each is bright and spacious, done in a largely neutral palette with some pleasant pops of color in patterned throw pillows and rugs. Entry-level rooms lack balconies, while higher-category rooms add furnished balconies, separate sitting areas, and ocean views. Family Rooms have small second bedrooms with bunk beds. Modern bathrooms have rainfall showers, robes, slippers, basic toiletries, and hairdryers; some add stand-alone bathtubs.

Apartments, Residences, and Villas add full kitchens -- groceries available at the on-site mini-market. Some have private pools. Standard amenities consist of free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, minibars, tea- and coffee-making facilities, and individually controlled air-conditioning. Some rooms are a bit of a trek from the pool, beach, and restaurants.

Features

Water park, oceanfront infinity pool, and daily activities keep guests occupied

Features are the main draw at Splash Beach Resort, and many guests stay here because they don't want to do much exploring. The most popular feature is undoubtedly the Splash Jungle Water Park, which is free for guests to access. It has several waterslides, a lazy river, wave pool, and swimming pools. Additionally, there are two pools at the hotel: a small, quieter one is set overlooking the grounds, while another larger, infinity-pool one overlooks the beach. The latter is next to the Beach Club, which slings cocktails and food, and occasionally has a DJ at night. A schedule of free daily activities is given to guests, with options such as sunset yoga and face painting. Cooking classes and Thai boxing lessons can be booked for a fee. For rainy days, there's an indoor kids' club complete with toys, video games, a Nintendo Wii, and an air-hockey table.

The spa offers various treatments in a quiet facility with a small outdoor pool. The small, modern fitness center is located above the buffet restaurant and includes modern cardio and strength-training equipment. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property and there are buggies to transport guests to and fro -- though the wait for an available one can be long. A large conference center is popular for corporate groups.

All-Inclusive / Food

Mediocre buffet restaurant, upscale Thai dinner eatery, and Beach Club

As of Spring 2019, dining options are limited to a buffet restaurant, Splash Kitchen, a well-regarded Thai a la carte, and the Beach Club. Splash Kitchen is open for all three meals, but food is largely mediocre, and there can be long waits at breakfast as it's the only option open. Also on the downside, some areas inside had an unpleasant odor during our stay. The oceanfront Splash Beach Club opens at noon and serves international and Thai cuisines and a full bar menu until late. Only open for dinner, Baan Thai is an upscale Thai restaurant with a gorgeous setting along a pond. A lobby bar is also on-site and room service is available 24/7.

The resort plans to add four more dining options.
