Bottom Line

The Shore at Katathani is an upscale, 36-room villa hotel that caters mainly to couples and honeymooners. Its private location, tucked away in a cove along Kata Noi Beach, adds to the hotel's intimate, beachy atmosphere. Guests spend most of their time lounging beside their private plunge pools or in oversize daybeds facing the ocean at the main infinity pool. While the property, which includes a small spa and oceanfront restaurant, does not allow children under the age of 12, its sister property, Katathani Phuket Beach Resort, about a 10-minute walk along the beach, is family-friendly.

The Shore At Katathani

Scene

An intimate and luxe resort caters mostly to couples, with large villas, ample areas for lounging, and around-the-clock room service

Opened in 2010, The Shore at Katathani is one of the most upscale resorts in Kata Beach. Its 36 villas were designed for lingering and relaxing, and many guests who check in at the property are honeymooning or enjoying a romantic escape.

The intended atmosphere, created by Thailand-based architectural firm NagaConcepts, is relaxed, uncluttered, and beach-inspired. Upon arrival, guests step in to a bright, airy lobby. Two benches tailored in soft, gray fabric are positioned in front of a long glass-topped front desk wrapped in white wainscoting. Overhead, a duo of black iron chandeliers contrasts with the white vaulted ceilings and the bleached-blond wood floors. Arrangements of neutral-toned square wicker sofas and accent pillows in soft hues of yellow provide space where guests can sit.

The hotel includes a small gym, library, and spa, but the main attraction is the gorgeous stretch of white-sand beach that curves gently from a rock outcropping at the far end of Kata Noi Beach, hugging the waves of the Andaman Sea.

The resort is a collection of white-clad buildings built into a hillside that cascades down toward the open-air restaurant. By the restaurant, a freeform infinity pool seems to spill over into the sea. Oversize lounge chairs and huge daybeds (large enough to fit four) surround the pool, facing the ocean, making ideal perches to languish with a book or a cocktail from the nearby bar.

Rooms

Spacious villas with private plunge pools, king-size beds, and shaded outdoor living areas

The Shore at Katathani features three distinct room types. The largest (split-level) villas (2,800 square feet) are suited to families or groups, with a master bedroom on the second floor and a second bedroom, as well as a living/dining area and a pool with a private sunbathing area for up to four people on the main floor. The Seaview Villas and Pool Villas have the same square footage (1,400 square feet) and layout, varying only by view -- the sea or the gardens.

Villas follow the same cohesive and uncluttered design found throughout the hotel, including bleached-blond wood floors, white vaulted ceilings with exposed beams, and decorative carved wood privacy screens. The furnishings in the villas include white-framed furniture finished in neutral fabrics, sheer window treatments, pale seashell-colored walls, and soft blue-and-green accent pillows.

In the bedrooms, white lantern-style chandeliers hang over floating tables on both sides of the king-size beds, which face glass doors that open to the pool. The bathrooms rival the size of the bedrooms and have freestanding clawfoot tubs, dual pedestal vanities, glass-enclosed showers with rainfall showerheads, ivory tile work, wide-plank wood floors, and double glass doors that open to the outdoor living rooms.

All of the villas feature infinity-edged plunge pools facing either the ocean or gardens, and sunken lounge areas with two chaise lounges and wraps of wispy mosquito netting. Additional amenities include Bose sound systems, work desks, large wardrobe/dressing areas, robes and slippers, eye pillows, Wi-Fi, minibars stocked with espresso machines and snacks, and mini-fridges filled with soda and Tsingtao beer.

Features

A small fitness center, a spa, a library, and a open-air restaurant overlooking a stunning infinity pool

As the name suggests, the beach is the top feature here, a fantastic unspoiled arc of white sand facing turquoise waves -- and the resort strives to showcase its beauty at every point. Arguably the best spot to enjoy the view is in the freeform infinity pool that seems to drop over the cliffside. It's bordered by several padded loungers, sun umbrellas, and shaded daybeds.

The Harbor, the hotel's only restaurant, serves artful international cuisine and specialty evening tapas, with seating under the roof of an open-air pavilion or on the terrace close to the pool. The Lighthouse cocktail bar has a variety of crafted concoctions, while the Cove has a stocked wine cellar that appeals to the hotel's wine-enthusiast guests. Room service is also available 24 hours a day.

The resort's small Serenity Spa, surrounded by reflection pools and greenery, features three spa villas with herbal steam rooms and outdoor plunge baths. Treatments include mango butter body scrubs and facials that incorporate local clay and fruit.

The small fitness center, with cardio- and weight-lifting equipment, is air-conditioned, and the hotel also offers free group yoga classes, aqua-fit classes, and tropical fruit-picking excursions.
