Bottom Line

The 58-room Hacienda Real del Caribe Hotel is a mid-range property built in the traditional hacienda style. It's centrally located within walking distance of the city's main shopping and nightlife areas, but this also means street-facing rooms suffer from late-night noise. The spacious rooms have flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi, as well as furnished balconies. They're arranged around a central courtyard with a pool and cushioned loungers. There's also an on-site restaurant open for all three meals, but the hotel lacks a gym. La Pasion Hotel Boutique offers more facilities and chic digs for just slightly higher rates, though some rooms are small.

Hotel Hacienda Real Del Caribe

Scene

Small hacienda-style hotel built around a central patio with pool

The hotel's attractive entrance with huge glass doors opens to a small, eye-catching lobby with a colorful tiled fountain, ample stonework, a red brick ceiling, and modern wicker furniture. This then leads to the central courtyard, which has a pool set amid tropical flora and surrounded by the rooms. Open-air hallways evoke the colonial past, with wrought-iron rails, arched cutouts, and stone columns. The rooms and restaurant aren't as pretty, but the design is modern and features lots of pleasant hardwood furniture. Overall, however, past guests feel the hotel misses the mark on providing a true hacienda-like stay.

Location

One block from the main street for nightlife and two blocks from the beach

Located in the heart of Playa del Carmen, the hotel is surrounded by restaurants, bars, hotels, shops, and tourist services. It is one block from Calle 12, the city's main nightlife area, which has the best clubs in town, including the Coco Bongo and the Palazzo. Heading west on Calle 12, there's a secondary ADO bus station and a Catholic church within a five-minute walk.

A fancy shopping center called Plaza Calle Corazon is a three-minute walk from the hotel, and a smaller shopping area, Plaza Pelicanos, is a one-minute walk away. The trendy Quinta Alegria mall is a six-minute walk from the property, and the city's famous Quinta Avenida, a pedestrian street filled with stores, restaurants, and hotels, is eight minutes away on foot.

The ferry terminal to Cozumel is about an 11-minute walk, and the main bus terminal is less than a 10-minute walk away, while the city's most famous beach clubs are about a six- to 10-minute drive away. Cancun International Airport is about a 50-minute drive from the hotel.

Rooms

Spacious air-conditioned rooms with mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and balconies or patios

Hacienda Real del Caribe's 58 rooms are spread over four floors and arranged around the courtyard. Colonial-inspired rooms feature marble tiling, dark-wood furniture, and comfy beds with quality linens. Pops of color come in the form of red bed runners, mustard-yellow curtains, bed skirts and accent walls, and local-inspired artwork. All rooms have patios or balconies, either facing the interior or overlooking the street. Note that city-view rooms often suffer from late-night noise.

All air-conditioned rooms come with desks, flat-screen TVs, ceiling fans, mini-fridges, coffeemakers, irons and ironing boards, and free Wi-Fi. Rooms have safes, but they're not large enough laptops. Decent-sized bathrooms have walk-in showers or shower/tub combos, while all come equipped with a range of toiletries and hairdryers.

Features

An outdoor pool, all-day restaurant, and free Wi-Fi

The hotel's courtyard has an outdoor swimming pool surrounded by a few cushioned loungers and umbrellas. The pool area stays open through the evening, and an adjacent restaurant is open all day. The hotel also serves an a la carte breakfast in a top-floor space with simple wooden furniture. A limited room service menu is available from a nearby restaurant, plus there's a vending machine on-site. Wi-Fi is free throughout, but the service can be unreliable. Notably, Hotel Hacienda Real del Caribe is one of the few downtown hotels in Playa del Carmen with on-site (albeit limited) parking.
