Bottom Line

The Crowne Plaza Portland-Downtown Convention Center is a busy upper-middle-range business hotel in the Lloyd District, within a 10-minute walk of the Oregon Convention Center and Moda Center. It has lots of attractive features including free shuttles to the airport and downtown, which is across the Willamette River, but there’s not much of note in the immediate area. Other highlights include lots of meeting space, an indoor pool, nice fitness center, a laundry room, Starbucks coffee station, and full-service restaurant: Boxwood Cafe. Parking is available, but expensive, and breakfast isn't included in rates. Traditionally-decorated (but slightly bland) rooms are clean and nicely equipped with Keurig coffeemakers, mini-fridges, and microwaves. The DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Portland is a similar alternative that's also within walking distance to the convention center, and has two restaurants.

Crowne Plaza Portland-Downtown Convention Center

Scene

A busy, traditional chain business hotel

This chain hotel stays busy with mostly business travelers during the week and leisure guests attending weekend events at the nearby Moda Center or the Oregon Convention Center. The decor is traditional and a bit dark, with low ceilings and a formal living room area in one section of the spacious lobby. Another living room-like area has a sofa and armchair facing a gas fireplace framed by a flat-screen TV and dark wood shelves. Even the adjacent Boxwood Cafe has a traditional feel, with oak wood paneling and an L-shaped bar sitting on a raised platform. The overall ambience is rather quiet and reserved.

Rooms

Clean but bland, with Keurig coffeemakers, microwaves, and mini-fridges

Similar to the hotel’s public spaces, the clean and comfortable guest rooms are decorated in a traditional style that’s a bit dark and bland. The walls are covered with soft gold wallpaper and the beds have bright white covers and copper bed skirts. The patterned carpet is mostly sage, and the matching wood furniture and headboards have an espresso finish. They are comfortably sized, with even Standard Double Queens having ample space for upholstered armchairs and desks with office chairs. Executive Kings include sleeper sofas and add robes to their amenities. Standard amenities in all rooms include Keurig coffeemakers, free Wi-Fi, mini-fridges, microwaves, flat-screen TVs, and safes. A free sleep kit includes ear plugs, eye masks, lavender sprays, and drape clips. Bathrooms are a tad small but not cramped. They come with black granite vanities and nice travertine tile on the floors and walls around the shower/tub combos. Magnifying mirrors and Templespa toiletries also are provided. Some rooms have lovely views of the Willamette River and surrounding hills.
