Bottom Line

The 145-room Axis Porto Business & Spa Hotel is an upper-middle-range option that's about a 15-minute drive outside of central Porto. There's not much around the hotel, and the closest metro station is a 15-minute walk away. Those facts aside, this is a pleasantly modern property. Spacious rooms are equipped with flat-screen TVs, minibars, and safes, and all have balconies. The restaurant gets mostly good reviews, and the breakfast buffet is free. A full-service spa is a plus, although there's a fee to use the small pool, sauna, and showers. There's no fitness center, but meeting rooms host groups. Travelers preferring to be in the center of Porto's action could check out the Carris Porto Ribeira instead. It's within walking distance of numerous attractions and rates are similar.

Scene

Modern hotel with a few nice extras that's most suitable for business guests and tour groups

This hotel has a lot going for it, despite it's location at a remove from Porto's scenic central areas. It's modern, clean, and polished, but there's nothing of interest nearby. Consequently, the hotel mostly attracts business guests attending local events or with business in the area. For them, this is a well-equipped option that has an abundance of space and sharp interiors. In addition to a restaurant and bar, it also features meeting rooms and several seating groups in the spacious lobby that provide places for informal gatherings. The hotel also is popular with tour groups, which can overwhelm the facilities at times.

Location

In a quiet and featureless area, a 15-minute drive from the center of Porto

This hotel is situated in a quiet area that's about a 15-minute drive outside the city of Porto. There's not much in the immediate vicinity, and the closest metro station is a 15-minute walk away. For those who prefer not to walk, a shuttle stops at the hotel to take guests to the metro (for a fee). Guests with cars do best here, as on-site parking is available (for a fee). Most attractions are at least a 15-minute drive from the hotel, or even longer by public transportation. Plan on about 15 minutes to reach the airport by car.

Rooms

Spacious and modern, with flat-screen TVs, minibars, air-conditioning, and balconies -- some with city views

Rooms and suites are modern and fresh, with minimal decoration, wood floors, and leather upholstered headboards. Dark wood furniture contrasts nicely against white walls. Amenities include air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, minibars, safes, and free Wi-Fi. Handsomely tiled bathrooms are equipped with hairdryers, bidets, shower/tub combos, magnifying mirrors, and toiletries. Glass doors lead out to unfurnished balconies, some with nice city views. The large Presidential Suite has a separate living and dining area, plus a kitchenette with a sink, microwave, and mini-fridge. One bathroom has a whirlpool tub big enough for two and a separate shower. A second bathroom has a shower/tub combo. One child younger than 12 stays free in rooms with an adult.

Features

Restaurant and bar, free breakfast, full-service spa, meeting rooms, free Wi-Fi, and on-site parking

This hotel offers a few basic features, but it lacks a fitness center and there are some surprising fees for using other facilities. The restaurant serves international buffets, and the breakfast buffet with hot-and-cold selections is included in room rates. A wall of windows in the restaurant provides plenty of natural light, adding shine to the hardwood floors. A bar is adjacent and has a small lounge area. Children get their own menu in the restaurant, and room service is available. The full-service spa offers massage treatments, a thermodynamic pool, sauna, Turkish bath, and a sensory shower, but there's a fee to use the facilities and bathing caps are required. Four small meeting rooms accommodate business gatherings. A desk in the lobby offers two computers for guests to use as well as a number of travel brochures. Parking is available for a fee, and Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
