Bottom Line

Still fresh off a mid-2016 opening, Eurostars Porto Douro is an upscale property with chic, sophisticated decor. Its 105 guest rooms, studios, and suites have refined details, like wood floors and marbled bathrooms, plus modern amenities, like minibars, flat-screen TVs, bathrobes, and rainfall showers. Studios and suites add kitchenettes, and some rooms have small balconies and river views. There’s no full-service restaurant or wellness facilities, but the hotel does provide a bar and a well-liked breakfast buffet, though it may cost extra fees. The location along the river affords exceptional views from the terrace and some guest rooms, and the walk to historic Ribeira Square is just 10 minutes. Travelers who’d prefer to be closer to sights might consider the 1872 River House -- though as a much smaller property, it can be hard to snag a booking.

Eurostars Porto Douro

Scene

Chic riverside hotel pairing moderns style with vintage details

With chic decor that pairs vintage and Victorian elements with modern styling, the Eurostars Porto Douro offers refined interiors plus river views. The four-story property’s playful facade features mosaic-tiled teal accented with fresh white and gray, a color palette that continues inside. Details are elegant: parquet floors, white chesterfield sofas, globe lights, and, in the breakfast room and bar, oval-backed dining chairs with turned legs. The property opened in mid-2016, almost doubling in size in mid-2017 when it added additional guest rooms. The upscale feel has a touch of romance that attracts couples, but with three-person bedrooms and mini-apartments, families will fit in here as well.

Location

Along Douro River, a short walk to the funicular and Ribeira Square

Excellent views are a highlight of Eurostars Porto Douro, which is flanked by bridges right along the Douro River. While the immediate area has little in the way of restaurants or shops, it’s just a 10-minute walk along the river to historic Ribeira Square, an area filled with restaurants, historic attractions, and famed port-wine cellars. In just five minutes, guests can walk to the Ponte Luis I Bridge and the funicular, an ideal way to cover the steep terrain to the northern parts of the city. Sao Bento Train Station is an 18-minute walk or as little as a five-minute drive. Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport is about an hour via public transit or a 20-minute drive.

Rooms

Sophisticated guest rooms with minibars and robes, plus mini-apartments with kitchenettes

Eurostars' sleek, sophisticated guest rooms feature wood floors, leathery headboards, and a refined palette of taupes, creams, and grays. Wood furnishings lend a traditional, Victorian feel with curved Queen Anne legs, while wallpapered accent walls and brass light fixtures add a contemporary touch. Bathrooms aren’t giant, but they’re chic and modern, pairing stylish marbled and mosaic tiling. Cylindrical sinks, walk-in rainfall showers, and bidets also come standard.

Room sizes include Single, Double, and Triple Rooms as well as Suites and Studios with kitchenettes featuring sinks, burners, microwaves, electric kettles, and cabinet space. Suites are effectively mini-apartments with separate sleeping, sitting, and dining areas. All rooms have air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, electric kettles for coffee/tea, minibars, safes, and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms are equally well-equipped with robes, slippers, individual toiletries by Hierbas de Ibiza, and hairdryers. River-facing rooms can have excellent views and often feature small balconies.

Features

Excellent breakfast buffet, bar, and terrace, but no full restaurant or gym

While extra features here may be limited -- there’s no full-service restaurant or wellness facilities -- what the property does do, it does well. The bar area is chicly regal with parquet floors, oval-backed Louis XVI chairs, and a central chandelier light. The breakfast room offers the same ambiance, and guests rave about the buffet which is served until late morning and features a plethora of local and international options and even Prosecco. It’s sometimes included in the room rate, though most guests don’t find the extra fee exorbitant. Breakfast room service is also available. An outdoor terrace offers patio seating, loungers, and views of the rivers and bridges.

For guests traveling with children, the hotel has cribs and babysitting can be arranged. Business travelers can make use of two meeting rooms with audio-visual equipment available. The front desk is open 24 hours, and Wi-Fi throughout is free. Extra-fee parking is offered at the hotel, but spaces are extremely limited.
