Bottom Line

The upper-middle-range Questenberk is a lovely boutique hotel in the Prague Castle District, occupying a 1600s building that was once part of the Strahov Monastery. Many of Prague’s top attractions are a short walk away, yet the area is quiet and away from the crowds. The Q15 restaurant serves breakfast (for a fee) and dinner, as well as free snacks every afternoon. Concierge services include a private car for airport transfers, but parking isn’t on-site. The 27 guest rooms are clean, spacious, and individually decorated, with minibars, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi. Rates are attractive for its location, but those seeking a more upscale experience might consider the nearby four-pearl Hotel Savoy, which has a small spa and marble bathrooms -- though rates can be higher.

Questenberk Hotel

Scene

A quiet boutique hotel aimed at tourists and housed in a distinctive historic building

Lovers of historic architecture are in for a treat at this quiet hotel that was part of the Strahov Monastery complex at one time. It dates back to 1620, and while it offers many modern amenities, it still features much of the original architecture that makes many people mistake it for a church. Arriving guests walk up stone steps past impressive period statues to an arched entry with wrought-iron doors. Inside, the thick plaster walls painted yellow cast a warm glow. Vaulted ceilings exude a sense of spaciousness in the modest lobby where a small desk and two chairs serve as the registration area. Vintage wood and leather furniture line tile floors, and crimson carpet runs the length of the long hallways. The cozy restaurant stays busy all day, serving breakfast and offering free treats in the afternoon. Most guests are tourists seeking to sightsee, and many value the quiet yet convenient location that's away from the bustle of Old Town, yet within walking distance of many top sites.

Location

In Prague’s Castle District, a short walk to many attractions and restaurants

Questenberk is located on a lovely cobblestone street overlooking the Strahov Monastery in Prague's Castle District, which is home to many historic landmarks, restaurants, and government buildings. It’s a convenient location from which to explore the city, with several restaurants a short walk away and the Pohorelec tram station just two minutes away on foot. The hotel is also within walking distance of major attractions, including the Strahov Monastery (four-minute walk), Prague Castle (eight-minute walk), Petrin Lookout Tower (15-minute walk), and Strahov Stadium (18-minute walk). The Charles Bridge can be reached in under 20 minutes on foot, or about the same amount of time via tram. While it's a 28-minute walk or 24-minute ride via public transit across the bridge to Old Town Square and its attractions, this side of the river has the advantage of being quieter. Václav Havel Airport is about a 20-minute drive or 45 minutes via public transit.

Rooms

Rooms with modern amenities like minibars; some with historic details

Questenberk's guest rooms are individually decorated and can vary in size and layout as the result of the historic nature of the building. But common elements include traditional decor that features floral print drapes and bed throws as well as vintage art. Pine furniture and trim with a light finish are also used throughout. Some rooms, such as the Superior Room we photographed, have dark wood ceiling beams (a beautiful nod to the hotel's history), but not all rooms feature them. Some rooms also have ornate parquet floors, however many have solid carpet in various colors. Overall, rooms are decorated simply and tastefully but aren't especially ritzy or stylish.

The rooms are spacious by European standards, with enough square footage to comfortably size armchairs and desks. The tan-tile bathrooms feature glass shower stalls. Standard amenities include minibars, coffeemakers, free bottled water, flat screen TVs, magnifying mirrors, and safes. Room service, turndown service, and free Wi-Fi are also provided. Robes and slippers are in all but the Standard Rooms. Some rooms have views of the old city, but others have small windows with little or no views. They're generally quiet, although some ambient noise can be heard.

Features

A solid lineup of features including a restaurant/bar with a balcony and concierge services

Petite urban properties -- especially those in historic buildings -- tend to skimp on features. But the Questenberk includes a nice lineup of amenities that's more in line with bigger properties. The on-site Q15 restaurant serves international and Czech cuisine for dinner, including bar service and outdoor seating on a small balcony with phenomenal views. The hotel's excellent breakfast buffet includes cooked-to-order eggs, but it's not included in rates. However, free food and drink is at hand: Free coffee is available all day, as well as free afternoon snacks that are served in the guest lounge. Guests also receive a free welcome drink at registration.

Services also seem more suited to a larger, more upscale hotel. Concierge services include dinner reservations and valet dry cleaning and laundry. The hotel also has a private car that can take guests to and from the airport for a fee. There's no business center, but a public computer provides internet access and free Wi-Fi is accessible throughout the hotel. Secure parking is available for a fee, but it’s a couple of blocks away.
