Augustine, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Prague

Set across seven historic buildings that date back to 1284 and were once a monastery and a brewery of the friars of Saint Augustine, this luxurious hotel retains many historic architectural features, like vaulted stone ceilings, that are combined with stylish, modern decor. The property can seem a bit labyrinthine at first, though there is a consistent calm elegance across all of the spaces, many of which are dotted with modern art pieces. The main lobby is illuminated by a glass skylight and furnished with red and black cubist couches and armchairs that pair well with contemporary sculptures and paintings adorning the walls.

Located on a cobblestone street with a tram passing directly in front of it, the hotel is in a fairly touristy area with a lot of daytime foot traffic. It's about an eight-minute walk from the Charles Bridge and a 13-minute walk from Prague Castle in the Mala Strana, a beautiful and historic region of the city that is rife with winding streets and lots of shops and restaurants. The Old Town with its famous square is just across the river and can be reached on foot in under 15 minutes. There is a bus and tram stop serving several lines down the street from the hotel. 

Historic architectural touches mix with contemporary decor in these elegant rooms, all of which are individually decorated and inspired by early 20th-century Czech cubism. Color schemes generally follow a pleasing combination of neutral hues complemented by bolder accents like greens and reds, with modern art paintings and posters adorning the walls. There are also four Signature Suites, which include the Fresco Suite featuring lovely trompe-l’oeil walls, and the Tower Suite, which offers panoramic views over the city and Prague Castle. All rooms have flat-screen TVs, well-stocked minibars, iPod docks, safes, and free Wi-Fi, though no tea- and coffee-making facilities. Marble bathrooms have heated floors and towel racks, fluffy bathrobes and slippers, high-end organic bath products, and shower/tub combos with rainfall showerheads. Suites have both walk-in rainfall showers and soaking tubs, and some have recessed TVs. Travelers should note that some street-side rooms might get noise from the passing tram.

The elegant Augustine Restaurant serves fine food in a beautiful space with herringbone parquet floors, modern decor, and an outdoor courtyard area. Breakfast is available for an extra charge (though it's included in some room rates). The hotel also offers cooking and cocktail classes. The St. Thomas Brewery Bar is a popular, atmospheric basement bar that serves excellent cocktails as well as a dark lager brewed according to an ancient recipe inherited by Augustinian monks since 1352. There's also a spa with a dry sauna, steam room, and a full range of massage services, plus a fitness center with modern machines and weights. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
