The Motor Lodge is a boutique value hotel with 12 rooms and a vintage style all its own. The property is right on Highway 89, within walking distance of the historic downtown area and Whiskey Row. Hiking/biking trails are a 15-minute drive away. All rooms are individually decorated with retro touches, and have mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and flat-screen TVs, but bathrooms are small. Each unit also has a patio with seating. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property and free loaner bikes are available to all guests. However, the hotel is far from the Phoenix airport and breakfast isn't available.

Oyster Hotel Review

The Motor Lodge

Unique retro boutique hotel with lots of personality and charm

An old orange Ford Truck at the entrance of The Motor Lodge sets the retro tone for this eccentrically charming hotel. Originally built in 1910, the U-shaped property’s green and orange paint shows its character and history, but the hotel also a modern design palette. The lobby, while small, has funky and colorful wallpaper along with wood floors, big windows, and vintage light fixtures. There’s a sitting area with tan chairs on a red floor and the space gets lots of sunlight through large windows. A glass of wine or a bottle of beer is presented upon arrival and guests receive a bag of homemade cookies at checkout. The grounds are adorned with a mix of trees, shrubbery, and metal art pieces.

Homey yet quirky vintage-style rooms with mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and patios with seating

The Motor Lodge offers a variety of room types, each individually decorated with a funky yet modern style. Rooms include an apartment with two bedrooms and a rental home with a full kitchen and gorgeous views of Thumb Butte and Granite Mountain. Red or gray carpets cover most rooms (the others have beautiful wood floors), and feature neutral patterned drapes and comforters, plus pillow-top mattresses. All rooms have outdoor patios with seating, and some have carports with AstroTurf. A combination of local art pieces and retro items such as vintage lamps, chandeliers in carports, and old phones decorate the rooms. That said, there are also contemporary features including flat-screen TVs, recessed lighting, and sliding barn doors.

Some rooms have kitchenettes with sinks and stovetops, and microwaves can be requested. Most bathrooms are tiny, with tan tile, interesting art pieces, and colorful shower curtains, with white sinks attached to the wall. Upgraded bathrooms, such as that in The Hideaway have exceptional features such as antique drawers, rainfall showerheads, and marvelous wood-and-stone showers. Paya toiletries are included in all bathrooms.
