Bottom Line

The 22-room Villa Gallici is a gorgeous luxury property situated in a residential area about a 10-minute walk from the center of Aix-en-Provence. Its grounds are well-manicured and lovely, and the interior is rich with period detailing and Provencal style. It's more like a grand residential property than a hotel. Rooms are all individually decorated with lush fabrics and wallpapers, true antiques, and rich historic detailing. The restaurant is also gorgeously decorated and has an impressive wine cellar, and the terrace makes for a fine alfresco dining spot under the trees. A picturesque pool, luxe spa, and fitness center all complete the package. Travelers looking for something a bit more modern and at lower rates could check out the Hotel Cezanne, which is also a little closer to town.

Villa Gallici

Scene

Elegant 18th-century boutique hotel situated amid glorious gardens

Set in an Italianate mansion that dates to the 18th century, this lovely boutique property looks more like a grand country estate than a hotel. The grounds are filled with fragrant flowers and shrubs, as well as statues, and pathways wind through the spectacular setting. Interiors are just as impressive and feature elaborately painted molding, rich fabrics, inlaid wood flooring, and a painted baby grand piano. Furniture and artwork are all original antiques, not reproductions, and they have been placed with a knowledgeable eye. Even the hallways to guest rooms are filled with antiques and historic artworks. The smell of lavender is evident throughout the hotel, and fresh roses add even more fragrant beauty, and fresh pastries are served in the lobby each afternoon -- a homey touch. This place is elegant and sophisticated, and not particularly suitable for families with young children. The romantic setting mostly attracts couples and is especially appealing to travelers who enjoy history and art and want to be away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Those drawn to modern or minimalist decor may find the Provencal style here to be over the top.

Classy restaurant and bar, wine cellar, terrace, outdoor pool, spa, fitness center

The on-site restaurant is gorgeous and lavishly decorated in Provencal style with antiques, rich fabrics, period artworks, and deep arm chairs for seating. It looks more like a grand residential parlor than a restaurant. Cuisine is Provencal. The terrace also is a lovely place to dine, with white table cloths and candle light setting a romantic tone under the trees. The restaurant and terrace can be reserved for private events of up to 35 people, and in nice weather the hotel's breakfast is served on the terrace (for a fee). Housed in a circular room, even the wine cellar is beautiful, with a huge chandelier in the center and musical-note motifs on glass doors showcasing the wine.

The outdoor pool is small but beautiful, with white cushioned lounge chairs shaded by red umbrellas. Topiary in large pots accent the four corners of the pool, and the views of the surrounding countryside are picturesque. The elegant spa offers a whirlpool, sauna, and massage services. The fitness center is small, with just a few machines, but it has huge wrap-around windows with beautiful views of the gardens. Parking and Wi-Fi are both free at the hotel.
