Bottom Line

The Lazy Parrot Inn is an established 21-room, lower-mid-range hotel with two restaurants, a pool, and mini-golf course set on a hillside surrounded by thick jungle and farmland. The rooms, set in the newer poolside building and the older main building near the street, vary greatly in style and price, appealing to budget-minded couples and families. The pool is the main attraction at the hotel, but it’s not exclusive to guests during the day and can become crowded with kids and families. Those seeking a quieter experience might enjoy the Dos Angelos Del Mar Bed and Breakfast or the beachfront Casa Islena.

Lazy Parrot Inn

Scene

One of the best-known hotel's in Rincon, the Lazy Parrot is laid-back and kitschy with a social scene revolving around its pool area, restaurant and bar.

The Lazy Parrot Inn is one of Rincon’s best-known, established hotels and is essentially two properties. The original building overlooks the street, and is home to the indoor/outdoor lobby, the property’s restaurant, Francisco’s, which serves traditional Puerto Rican food, and a set of value-level rooms with limited views. The restaurant dining room offers the first peek at the hotel’s core: a pool, tiered gardens, and views of the surrounding jungle and distant ocean.

From the restaurant, stairs lead down the hillside, past cages of colorful parrots, terra-cotta urns, and a canopy of twisting vines and palm trees. At the bottom, the property gives way to the small pool, bar, and pizzeria, a place that allows non-hotel guests to use the pool. During the afternoon, families and active kids mingle with guests, occupying the plastic lounge chairs and hopping from hot tub to pool to restaurant tables between bites of pizza.

Across a stretch of stone terrace, adjacent to the pool, is the hotel’s second (newer) building -- a three-story aquamarine structure with arched windows and terraces. The open-air lobby with its bright yellow walls is decorated in tropical British Colonial style with carved mahogany furniture, neutral fabrics, and a smattering of parrot-inspired lamps and decor. The lobby offers guests a comfortable place to relax, read, enjoy coffee, and escape the sun or the occasional rain shower. Guests feeling ambitious can sign out putters from the boutique and head to the mini-golf course, a rambling and rustic course built into a steep hillside below the hotel.

Rooms

Beach-inspired and Caribbean-Colonial style rooms, all with mini-refrigerators and microwaves, some with terraces overlooking the pool

The Lazy Parrot’s 21 rooms fall into three main categories that vary by size, views, and price. The Value Rooms are set in the original building of the hotel, which sits at the top of the hillside facing the street. The rooms are accessed from the hotel lobby and feature basic white furniture, hand-painted wall murals of scenes such as surfacing whales, and one or two full-size beds with floral-print covers. Bathrooms feature pedestal sinks and showers over tubs. The Value Rooms vary in layout, but do not have balconies and are limited in view and natural light. (There is also a single Economy Room that is the smallest and cheapest available unit, with a full-size bed.)

Located on the top floor of the original building are the hotel’s Upper Value Rooms. Decorated in nautical, light-house-themed style, the rooms offer queen-size beds, small bathrooms, and a huge semi-shared deck with views of the distant ocean and surrounding hillside.

The hotel’s most updated and priciest rooms are set in the newer, poolside building. They are decorated in Caribbean Colonial style with mahogany furniture such as beds (one king or two queen-size) with carved pineapples and wrought iron details, armoires, and cafe tables. The floors are finished in neutral-toned ceramic tiles, the beds are covered with floral bedding and coordinating pillows, and the ceilings have fans to help circulate the air. All of these rooms have large balconies with two chairs and a table, and views of the pool and surrounding hillside. Bathrooms are basic, with walk-in showers with glass-block half walls, single vanities with raised bowl sinks, and baskets of towels and toiletries. All of the rooms come equipped with microwaves and mini-refrigerators as well as free Wi-Fi.

Features

Two restaurants, two bars, a pool with a hot tub, and a rustic mini-golf course built into a steep hillside

The Lazy Parrot delivers a variety of activities for its guests. At the bottom of the property, adjacent to the pool is Mi Familias, a casual restaurant specializing in brick-oven pizza. Open for lunch and dinner, the restaurant is also steps from the pool bar, a small spot that serves microbrews and happy hour drink specials. Set along the path up the hillside in the original part of the hotel is Francisco's, the hotel's main restaurant, specializing in Puerto Rican food. Additionally, the restaurant has a small bar that's popular during the sunset hour.

Other activities for guests at the hotel include hanging out in the open-air lobby and venturing to the rustic mini-golf course. The pool is ideal for a quick swim, but it lacks shade and is often busy with families (many non-guests) enjoying the restaurant. The hotel's location makes it easy for an escape to the nearby lighthouse and several surrounding beaches, including Domes (popular with surfers) and Steps, ideal for snorkeling and watching sunsets.
