Bottom Line

Le Consulat is a two-and-a-half-pearl hotel located in San Juan’s stylish Condado district. The hotel offers access to the neighborhood’s buzzing nightlife scene, as well as Condado Beach, which is less than a five-minute walk away. The hotel’s 20 guest rooms are simple and unassuming; they offer coffee- and tea-making facilities as well as flat-screen TVs. Its city view terrace is charming, and the freshly cooked breakfast is above average. One major downside is the tiny pool. It’s worth comparing rates with the nearby Holiday Inn Express San Juan Condado, which has a bigger pool and a similar location.

Le Consulat Hotel at Condado San Juan

Scene

This unfussy value option is a popular choice for pre- and post-cruise stays

Le Consulat’s smart little four-story exterior makes a cute first impression. Inside, the quaint reception area includes a potted orchid and a bold blue accent wall. Free water is provided on the tiled reception desk. A framed photo of Le Consulat, a historic Parisian cafe, hangs on the wall. The cafe supposedly served as inspiration for the hotel’s name. The breakfast area plays up the hotel’s French theme with wall murals of French words and crepes on offer; however, this theme and the hotel’s branding as a boutique property seem to have been forgotten in its run-of-the-mill guest rooms. Le Consulat attracts a number of pre- and post-cruise guests -- mostly couples -- so many are only here for a quick one-night stay.

Location

Action-packed location in San Juan’s busy Condado district

Le Consulat is located just off Avenida Ashford, the main road that runs through the Condado district. The hotel is a five-minute walk from beautiful Condado Beach. Diverse shops and restaurants are found within walking distance as well. Condado is also one of the city’s biggest nightlife hubs, packed with casinos, bars, and clubs. La Ventana al Mar, a pretty oceanfront park that often hosts outdoor events, is a four-minute walk away. Old San Juan and its historic sights can be reached in about 20 minutes by car, and Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport is an 11-minute drive, without traffic.

Rooms

Pleasant rooms include flat-screen TVs as well as coffee- and tea-making facilities

Rooms at Le Consulat are somewhat bland. They're decorated with maroon bed runners and skirts, dark wood furniture, and crisp white duvets. Art choices are somewhat odd, ranging from Lech Walesa (the former president of Poland) quotes to Andy Warhol prints. Closets offer storage space, as well as irons and personal safes. All rooms feature flat-screen TVs, two bottles of water, and coffee- and tea- making facilities. Many rooms have simple work desks and sleeper sofas. Some rooms have terraces with loungers, but most are enclosed by high walls that obstruct any possible views.

Generic bathrooms offer granite countertops and showers. Bathrooms are stocked with citrus-smelling shampoo, conditioner, and body lotion from Judith Jackson Spa. Rooms were tidy during our visit, but past guests have reported cleanliness problems and lack of hot water in the showers.

Features

Tiny outdoor pool, free freshly cooked breakfast, and free Wi-Fi

Features are limited but convenient at Le Consulat. Free breakfast is served in a bright dining area on the top floor the hotel. Breakfast includes orange juice, coffee or tea, oatmeal, a croissant, as well as a choice between a few different types of crepes. But lunch and dinner aren't served on the property. The breakfast area includes a work station with a personal computer available for guest use. This area opens onto a lovely terrace with dark wicker patio furniture, which offers beautiful views over the city.

The hotel also features a tiny outdoor pool, but it was closed for maintenance during our visit. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout. Parking isn't offered on-site, but there are several lots nearby where guests can park for a surcharge.
