What It's Like
Once a booming area catering to foreign tourism, and then forgotten and somewhat sketchy, Condado became an affluent beachfront neighborhood after the remarkable rehabilitation carried out in the late 90s and early 2000s. Now high-rise hotels and condos fill the tree-lined sidewalks, though a few more traditional buildings remain.
Tourists fill the streets of this glitzy neighborhood at night, when casinos and clubs come alive for yet another long night of gambling and dancing. The main draw during the day is the busy beach, though there are better ones east of Condado.
Wonderful shopping and outstanding restaurants also mean crowds, but the neighborhood has been able to keep somewhat of a laid-back attitude despite its Miami Beach appearance. There are few tourist sites here, and historic Old San Juan is across the bridge, so be ready to take the bus to do more cultural activities.
Where to Stay
The beachfront hotels are high-rise buildings and modern towers. You won't find too many smaller hotels in this neighborhood, but those that do exist are inland. Avenida Ashford is the main strip here, with casinos, shops, restaurants and nightclubs lining the streets -- staying on or around this main thoroughfare also offers easy access to the beaches, Old San Juan, and the airport.
