Cairns Coconut Holiday Resort is a sprawling resort that provides an affordable, all-in-one holiday destination for families, with a huge number of kids' amenities and some decent features for adults, too. There are two big outdoor pools and a water park that the kids will love, while adults might appreciate the fitness center and tennis court. A wide range of no-frills accommodation choices, from basic campsites to well-appointed villas, makes it easy to tailor a stay here to your specific needs and budget. However, those looking for urban thrills may wish they were closer to downtown Cairns.
Scene
Clean and welcoming family resort
Although Cairns Coconut Holiday Resort is aimed squarely at families on budgets, the impeccably maintained rooms, campsites, and gardens make it seem like a much pricier resort. The 28 acres of grounds are truly impressive, with amenities dotted tastefully throughout, while communal areas like the lobby are spotlessly clean. Because so many families come back here year after year, there's a friendly, collaborative atmosphere around the resort, as guests share tips with each other or take turns minding groups of kids. As you might expect, the atmosphere can be a bit noisy, with excited kids running around.
Location
Quite a distance from central Cairns, but easily accessible
The resort is situated southwest of the city, a 15-minute drive from the marina downtown. It's possible to arrange for taxis to pick you up from the resort, and there is a free shuttle bus -- but if you want to explore the Cairns metro area on your own terms, as well as visit the nearby supermarket (five minutes' drive) for food, a car is essential. The upside of being removed from central Cairns is, of course, the resort's sheer size -- properties in town are much less spacious. The airport is about 20 minutes' drive away.
Rooms
Cheerful, no-frills rooms and suites plus a range of campsite options
With no fewer than nine types of cabin to choose from, the accommodation offering at Cairns Coconut runs the gamut from ultra-basic to spacious and comfortable. At one end of the scale, the En-suite Cabins feature just the bare essentials: you will need to bring your own bed sheets and toiletries. At the other end, the Sun Lagoon Condos feature spa baths, cable TV, laundry facilities, and undercover parking. The cabins are not stylish, but they are clean and well-maintained. Crucially, all cabins are air-conditioned.If you're bringing your own caravan or tent, you can choose from en-suite sites (which feature a hut with shower, toilet, and vanity), powered sites for caravans (with water, power, and sewage outlets), or simple camping sites for tents (with access to shared toilets and kitchens).
Features
Water-based activities are the highlights of a long features list
Kids are spoilt for choice at Cairns Coconut Holiday Resort -- there's so much on offer that leaving the resort may not even be necessary. First and foremost are the two large pools (both with waterslides), the toddlers' wading pool, and the separate Splash Waterpark. On dry land, there are an adventure playground, 18-hole mini golf course, pedal karts, the Southern Hemisphere's largest jumping pillow, and a beach volleyball court. In the evening, outdoor movies are screened. Adults can take advantage of a small but well-equipped gym, tennis courts, and aqua aerobics classes, and can check e-mail at several Wi-Fi hotspots on the grounds. A mini-mart sells snacks and toiletries.
