Scene
Self-catering apartments in residential towers
There are plenty of self-catering options in Cairns, but most are designed either for hard-partying backpackers or for families on budgets. The Jack & Newell apartments fills a different niche: it's upmarket (but not over-the-top) and entirely self-contained, so it attracts a grown-up clientele looking for independence and a bit of peace and quiet. A visit here feels more like house-sitting for a colleague who's away on business than staying in a hotel, and it's not surprising to discover that the majority of the building is home to residential apartments.
Location
Slightly removed from the action but close enough to walk
Although these apartments are just around the corner from a shopping plaza and only 500 meters from Cairns's bustling marina, the apartments feel pleasantly secluded. Wharf Street, which runs along the water, has a low-key, residential feel, and you may need to walk a block or two to hail a taxi. Still, guests are within walking distance of all the other main sights, such as the casino (five minutes' walk) and the lagoon (15 minutes' walk). The airport is a 10-minute drive away.
Rooms
Modern and well-appointed rooms, with particularly good kitchen facilities
Although the apartments come in various configurations (from one bedroom to three bedrooms), all are spacious, contemporary, and immaculately presented. Art on the walls, flowers on the benches, and books on the shelves give them a homey feel. Every apartment has a balcony, laundry facilities, plus impressive kitchens that are stocked with utensils and equipped with modern appliances. The living areas have tiled floors or hardwood floors while the bedrooms are carpeted. The usual creature comforts that you'd expect in an upmarket hotel are present, including air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs (with DVD players and cable access), and free Wi-Fi. There's also a daily housekeeping service (although no turn-down) and dry-cleaning. Not all of the bathrooms are particularly glamorous (though some feature fun, modern tile) but each contains a separate shower and tub. Towels and basic toiletries are provided.
Features
A well-maintained pool and functional gym
Guests have access to the facilities that the tower's residents use, including a pool that's large enough for laps, a small gym with a good variety of equipment, and a barbecue area. There is also an oversized outdoor chess set. In addition, there are amenities provided specifically for visitors, including a 24-hour front desk, a guided-tour desk, limited business services (including photocopying), and free covered parking.
