Scene
A modest exterior hides one of Port Douglas's best-value accommodations
The Lazy Lizard Motor Inn may not be much to look at from the street – just a collection of squat buildings surrounded by typical tropical foliage – but as guests make their way toward the lobby it becomes apparent that this is an extremely well-maintained motel. The gardens are immaculate, the pathways are pristine, and the refurbished lobby itself is neat and inviting. Ask the motel's repeat visitors why they return, and they'll single out the attentive service every time. And its prices are some of the lowest in Port Douglas.
Location
Not as central as some of its competitors, but the sights are still within walking distance
The motel is located at the quieter end of Davidson Street, farther south than most of Port Douglas' shops and restaurants. It's about a 20-minute walk north along Davidson Street to reach the main shopping strip at Macrossan Street, although some restaurants are located along the way (the motel's owners can help with recommendations). Those planning to self-cater will need a car for the 10-minute drive to the town's main supermarket. On the plus side, it's less than 10 minutes' walk to the southern tip of Four Mile Beach. The Cairns Airport is about an hour away by car.
Rooms
Sparsely decorated yet functional rooms in tip-top condition
The decor in the motel's 22 rooms is hardly eye-catching – think plain white walls, white-and-gray floor tiles, and gray sofas – but the interiors are spotless, and tropical print accent pillows and bed runners, added after our visit, provide pops of color. Each room features a good combination of practical amenities (desks, hairdryers, kitchenettes with microwaves) and creature comforts (TVs and DVD players, air-conditioning, minibars). The beds and sofas are clean and comfortable. The bathrooms are impressive for this accommodation class, with separate baths and showers and supplied Eco toiletries; and all rooms have outdoor seating areas.Unlike many budget accommodations in Australia, the rooms here are cleaned every day. There is also free Wi-Fi.
Features
A good range of self-service amenities including laundry and bike hire
The motel's saltwater swimming pool may not be large, but it's more than adequate for an evening dip after a hot day, and new loungers were added after our visit. Those keen to stretch their legs (or get around Port Douglas without a car) can borrow free bicycles from the reception, which can also help arrange airport transfers or day-trip bookings free of charge. The on-site laundry room has modern coin-operated machines. There is also a covered communal barbecue area. The continental breakfast (which must be reserved at the time of booking) is a stand-out, featuring fresh produce such as macadamia muesli. The food is delivered to the rooms.
