Bottom Line

This 205-room, mid-range Holiday Inn underwent renovation in 2015, giving its common areas a punch of style and pizzazz. The spacious rooms overlook a large atrium, meaning they can pick up noise from the lobby bar. Amenities include a large indoor pool and adjoining fitness center, a sauna, hot tub, and a small business center. The on-site restaurant serves breakfast, which is not included, but children eat for free. Located next to the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center and a half-hour drive to Mount Rushmore, it’s a convenient choice for both business and leisure travelers.

Oyster Hotel Review

Holiday Inn Rapid City – Rushmore Plaza

Scene

Beautiful, soaring atrium that integrates water and nature into its design

The hotel is centered around a soaring atrium, which gives the hotel a grand look. The atrium is beautifully landscaped with plants, trees, fountains, and stone walls; round paper lanterns hang from the ceiling, and the total effect is one of peaceful serenity. Islands of black, brown, and beige seating dot the main floor, and a grand piano sits off to one side. The restaurant and bar, which have multiple flat-screen TVs, occupy the atrium, making for a lively atmosphere.

Rooms

Renovated and spacious, decorated in soothing shades

The 205 rooms at the Holiday Inn Rapid City -- which include Double Queen, King, and Executive Rooms decorated in soothing shades of beige, mauve, and teal -- were renovated in 2015. Light-wood walls back the beds and complement the light-wood furniture throughout. Some rooms have separate seating areas with couches and coffee tables.

Amenities include flat-screen TVs, mini fridges, microwaves, coffeemakers, irons and ironing boards, and hairdryers in the bathrooms. Bathrooms are on the small side but have long vanities with lots of storage space, and curtained shower/tub combos. While the rooms are attractively arranged around an atrium, guests have complained about noise traveling from it, especially from the lobby bar.
